The Belle of New York

Fred Astaire dances on air in this fantastical Freed Unit confection. He's a playboy in turn-of-the-century Manhattan who must give up his philandering ways to win the affections of a prim Salvation Army worker (Vera-Ellen). The film's whimsical premise -- that true love makes one airborne -- yields the surreally memorable image of the couple waltzing amidst the clouds and rooftops of New York.
