Death (Pitt), tired of eons of delivering billions of people to their last rewards, decides to take a few days off of the job, taking human form. Death wants to get away from the job, as the weight of the job, and all of the pain and suffering that comes with it, is getting to him. He meets a businessman (Hopkins) with two daughters (Forlani and Harden), who takes Joe (see title, this is what Death calls himself on Earth) under his wing, and along the way, teaches Death some of the lessons of Life. Even though Joe tremondously enjoys his time on Earth, there is a bit of a problem, however. You see, as long as Death is 'off the job', no one can die... at all. This leaves millions of people who should die, in agony, as their pain is not ended when it should be. Death has a tough choice. Stay on Earth and he could be happy, or return to his job, and make millions happy.
