Gertrudis is a Jewish immigrant born on the docks when her parents' ship arrives in the harbour of Buenos Aires at the beginning of the 20th century. Labelled ugly by her jealous younger brother, she tends to blend into the background, especially when photographs are taken. When Gertrudis is married off to an older, wealthy Jewish rancher, she appears to have a happy life, raising a loving family. One day, however, her husband hires an itinerant photographer to photograph the ranch, and Gertrudis is strangely drawn to this handsome yet physically imperfect man. She finally learns that beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder.
