    Un Monstre à Paris

The French animated film "Un monstre à Paris" (A Monster in Paris) has some excellent musical segments, enjoyable characters and its share of big laughs. The plot concerns a mysterious creature with a beautiful voice who befriends a cabaret singer. While the "monster" Francoeur (voiced by Matthieu Chedid) and his musical partner Lucille (Vanessa Paradis) begin making beautiful music together, the wannabee hero and mayoral candidate Victor Maynott (François Cluzet) is closing in the creature who just a few nights ago had been wandering the streets confused and accidentally terrorizing everyone that gazed upon its form. In the hopes that capturing and killing it will win him the admiration of the Parisians, he will stop at nothing to find it. Lucille's, her childhood friend Raoul (Gad Elmaleh) and Francoeur have to find a way to escape the man's grasp.

The film isn't perfect; while most of the time the animation looks gorgeous, a couple of scenes look a little bit off and not all of the jokes work. The fragmented ending might throw you off as well, but I did think that it did a good job of tying everything up nicely. I liked the characters so much by the end of the film that I truly did want to see how everyone turns out. I laughed hard more than a few times and I was extremely impressed by the musical numbers. Since I've seen the film I've found myself humming the tunes more than once and from the clips that I saw, the English translations are just as good.

Smart children's/family films are often hard to find, particularly if you want to see something that hasn't been released by the major studios. I initially thought I was taking a chance with this one, but it's a sure-winner. The film is actually significantly better than the cover makes it seem so if you're interested at all," A Monster in Paris" has a lot of good things going for it. I know that in my native neighborhood there are a lot of families that want to find good films in French and this is one that I would wholeheartedly recommend to them. Even If you don't speak French, the clips I saw show that a lot of care has been taken to make the English translation worthy. It's worth doing a bit of digging that the video store to find "A Monster in Paris", particularly if you can speak and understand French. (Original French version on Dvd, November 25, 2012)
