I love movies about movies. The cinema industry has always fascinated me (hence why Hugo is one of my favourite movies ever) I am also super interested in communism in America during the Cold War. So, I guess you could say that I was excited for Trumbo. Well, I'm glad to say that Trumbo really surprised me!
Bryan Cranston gives a truly OSCAR WORTHY performance! It might just be his best performance since Breaking Bad! He's such a good character actor. The supporting cast including John Goodman, Diane Lane, Helen Mirren and Louis C. K. all deliver very fun and entertaining performances. Especially Hellen Mirren, who is delightfully evil.
The story of Trumbo is very well executed. It's both a major character study and a historical biopic. Trumbo is both loveable and hatable at the same time. He's such an interesting character and Bryan Cranston plays him wonderfully. I really enjoyed how the story was structured, as well. The pace is very quick, the story is always captivating and considering I did not know the events of the true story, it was a history lesson at the same time.
I have only two flaws with Trumbo. Firstly, it occasionally felt sappy. It felt like they were trying so hard to make you feel for the character, that it was too over-the-top. Secondly, there are some moments that slow to a halt. It picks back up, but some scenes felt useless and boring. That being said, Trumbo is excellently directed and very well edited. I also loved the cinematography and the musical score.
Overall, Trumbo is a must-see for cinema and history buffs! It captures a sad point in history with stellar acting and a captivating story. See it!
