    Tremors

"Tremors" works; with likeable characters, unique monsters with a great gimmick and a smart story you'll have a great time watching it. There are a lot of moments that will have you laughing and when you're not laughing you'll be on the edge of your seat wondering how these characters will get out of the dire situation they've found themselves in. Valentine McKee (Kevin Bacon) and his Early Basset (Fred Ward) are just two regular handymen working in a small town who find their dreams of making their way out of the Sierra Nevada Mountain desert cut short. After a series of unexplainable deaths, they meet with a seismologist named Rhonda (Finn Carter), who discovers that the strange tremors in the valley are caused by "Graboids" tunneling sand worms who reach out of the earth with their triple-tentacle mouths and grab you!

One of the best things about the film is the special effects. These are all practical effects, using puppets, miniatures and costumes and they really work to convincingly create these unique monsters that are ready to gobble up anyone foolish enough to stay on the ground. These beasties have a unique look to them, a distinct set of strengths and weaknesses (they're a whole lot cooler than C.H.U.D.s, for instance) and their nature makes for some very creative and exhilarating scenes. Plus, don't they have one of the coolest monster names ever? When you hear someone say they love those Graboids, you know they're a fan of this movie.

Whenever I watch one of these 1950's style monster movies, I always look forward to getting the monster. Here, getting to know the humans is just as fun. Finding out how your heroes are going to take it down, which of the quirky characters are going to survive and which ones are going to turn into monster food keeps you interested throughout and I think a big part of this is because the film delivers good amounts of suspense with the monsters staying hidden for a lot of the movie, but also shows off Its wonderful creations plenty and pits them against people that are smart enough to possibly get out of this situation alive. You won't ever be thinking to yourself "wow, these characters are stupid and I can't get behind them because there is no way they deserve to live after that mistake". Don't mistake this for a horror film because it isn't, it's a comedic adventure monster movie that's sure to have you satisfied. (On Dvd, December 1, 2012)
