Good adaptation of Puccini's "cheap little thriller" as the critics called it in 1900. Well it's still going strong 116 years later. The plot is from a French Sardou play, but pared down to the most bare bones dramatic elements and it works. A handsome production with world famous Roberto Alagna as Mario, Angela Gheorghiu as Tosca and Riggero Raimondi as the infamous chief of Rome's police. It tales place in 1800 when the political climate in Europe was under siege by Napoleon. Keep this in mind as you are seeing the production!
