    The Piano

A most unusual but beautiful film of a woman with a disability (?) and her youngish daughter's arrival on the shores of 19th century New Zealand with, of all things, a piano which is both her pride and joy. Jane Campion was the second Oscar nominated female as BEST DIRECTOR in this year of 1993, the first being Lina Wertmuller for Seven Beauties from the 1970's. Miss Campion so deserved the nomination for this stunning, luscious film. The men of The Piano play more than great roles in the telling of this brooding often darkish tale, but it is HOLLY HUNTER and 14 year old ANNA PAQUIN who rule the roost as both went on to win Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Oscars for 1993. It is Jane Campion's crowing glory which hardly means her other works are to be sneezed at. Her WOMAN BY THE LAKE with Golden Globe Winner Elizabeth Moss is a tremendous two part film from two years ago WHICH I MOST HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Miss Campion is a New Zealand treasure!
