Even if you keep your expectations low," Mutant Chronicles" is a disappointment. Set In 2707, humanity battles against a "machine" that came to earth 10,000 years ago to… destroy us all? It transforms people into grotesque brainless minions called "mutants", who in turn kill or convert everyone they can get their knife-hands on. A group of soldiers are sent on a suicide mission to take down the heart of the machine while steam-powered technology battles the legions of monsters on the surface.
Even if you can forgive the sub-par special effects (which, considering the low budget you sort of have to) this film is an eyesore. The constant, continuous use of green screen and CGI, even for the most simple of things like bullet wounds, blood and explosions is unforgivable. All of these have been done for decades without the use of a computer to great effect, so why go for the stuff that will constantly pull the audience out of the movie? If that wasn't bad enough, the performances are bland, which I suppose serves the flat characters well. The bottom line is that this movie is not very good and hardly anything to really complain about because who, in their right mind is going to see this one, but I'm on a role, so I might as well keep going. There are some glaring continuity errors towards the conclusion and the film tries to do so many things at once that it's hard to care if anyone lives or dies. The film's plot feels recycled from countless others, which you might not recognize if you haven't seen a lot of films but if you are drawn to this one because you hear the word mutant and you get all excited. I've got some bad news. The word "mutant" is thrown very liberally around here, making it that much obvious that this script was quickly written. Even die-hard enthusiasts or tales where man has to fight off an otherworldly force while mind-control is turning friends against friends with our only hope resting in a crack team of special ops will be checking their watches.
If you ever wanted to see Ron Pearlman playing a monk fighting mutants with a team of misfit killers in a steam punk inspired world you could try "Mutant Chronicles" but you could probably get just as much satisfaction by typing in those keywords in "Deviantart". I can't think of anyone that wouldn't find "Mutant Chronicles" tedious and even if these imaginary, incredibly forgiving people decide to watch this wreck, the overwhelming amount of bad elements will eventually break them down (On DVD, December 10, 2012)
