This adaptation was a long time coming -- Disney had the rights to Tolkien's trilogy in the 50's and reportedly Stanley Kubrick had toyed with a live-action version. Bakshi's version though could hardly be better -- successfully mixing animation with live action tracings, he even mirrored some of Tolkien's own drawings, and wisely tackled only the first 2/3 of the trilogy. His choice of British actors (among them John Hurt) adds a note of authenticity and Leonard Rosenman's score seals the deal. Long cherished by Bakshi and Tolkien fans alike, a must-see for the entire family, or just the kid in you.
