I was sort of excited for Mockingjay - Part 2. I am a fan of the first two Hunger Games movies, and I really dislike Mockingjay Part 1. I found it to be slow, boring and very uneventful. So I was interested, but sceptical to see how Part 2 was. Well, I'm very glad to say that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is a huge improvement on its predecessor!
The acting all around is fantastic. Jennifer Lawrence delivers yet another fantastic performance as Katniss Everdeen. Here, she is much calmer and more emotional than the previous films, and it works beautifully. Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Julianne Moore and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (RIP) all give excellent performances once again. Donald Sutherland's President Snow seemed a little too over-the-top for my liking, but he is still one of the most compelling characters in this franchise.
The story was very so-so. It had moments of greatness and moments of unfortunate boredom and confusion. I do understand that since it's based on a mediocre book, it could not take many liberties. However, much of the story just didn't do it for me. Some moments that should have huge emotional impact just missed the mark completely.
However, as a conclusion to a franchise, Mockingjay Part 2 worked nicely. The finale was very interesting and was a good send-off to this series. I still firmly believe that Parts 1 and 2 should have been combined into one film, as there are moments where the pacing is just snail-paced.
The action, editing and special effects were great. One scene in the sewers was very reminiscent of Aliens, and was very suspenseful and genuinely scary. The musical score and directing were also decent and worked for the film.
Overall, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 is a good send-off to the Hunger Games franchise. It has great acting and suspense, but it is unfortunately hurt by the jumbled pacing and mediocre story. See it if you are a fan of the franchise!
