Birth of a Nation shares its title with the silent D. W. Griffith movie from the earlier silent era and basically deals with the same time frame of American history give or take a number of years. There was much controversy over the silent movie and there is some criticism of this new movie which seems to paint everything in black or white... that is... in terms of good and evil. We have seen the entire dehumanizing of blacks in the States as said from the silent era to Gone With The Wind to the Oscar Winning film of a few years ago '12 Years a Slave'. We don't really learn much that is new in that horrendous period, but this does not mean that we are immune to the suffering of an entire race. If you intend to see the film, beware that like its predecessors it is violent and harsh. I don't think that the 2016 Birth of a Nation, however, comes even close to its counter part blockbuster films of the past that deal with the same material.
