    Sing

"Sing" belongs beneath both "Moana" and "Trolls" as far as this year's animated musicals go, but that doesn't mean it's not worth checking out. With too many characters and been-there-done-that plots, it's the film's gorgeous musical climax, the voice talents and clever visuals that make it enjoyable.

In a world of anthropomorphic animals, theater owner Buster Moon (a Koala voiced by Matthew McConaughey) decides to throw a singing competition to solve his financial troubles. He doesn't have the prize money, but will he pull it off? Musical hopefuls include a domesticated pig named Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), arrogant mouse Mike (Seth McFarlane), teenage porcupine Ash (Scarlett Johanson), a gorilla from the wrong side of the tracks named Johnny (Taron Egerton) and a shy elephant (Tori Kelly as Meena)

In addition to this zoo, we also have some obligatory one-gag competitors that are dropped early on. These and some of the stories could have been trimmed to focus on perhaps one, maybe two of the main animals. It comes across as though "Sing" suddenly needed more material to reach full-length running time and writer/director Garth Jennings panicked and ran to a box of scripts destined for television. That can't be the case, as the film runs 110 minutes. This lack of focus means your favorite character(s) will get very few musical numbers to themselves and little character development too. Yes, it's an ensemble piece, but did it need to be? I would've liked to have seen the story focus on overly busy mom Rosita. The way she juggles rehearsals and her huge litter is ingenious, funny and visually imaginative.

Despite my reservations about the story itself, I had a good time. There are laughs throughout and a lot of energy in the choreographed dances. Particularly during the last bit of the film, where the big show is put on, we get a wide array of different numbers and styles by the crew. They're all great. It even manages (once in a while) to jazz up its sights and sounds by utilizing the fact that "Sing" is populated by animals (I'm thinking of the porcupine and the mouse particularly) I prefer when musicals use original songs (there's only one new tune here) but the soundtrack is filled with favorites. The 3D is decent, showing that Illumination knows how to use the tech well and integrate it into the plot in an organic manner.

"Sing" has all of the flaws I expected it to have. It's not as imaginative with its animal population as this year's "Zootopia" and the lack of originality from the plot and melodies means it's a lesser animated musical. Nonetheless, I enjoyed it, I got invested in the story and give it a recommendation. If you have been looking forward to "Sing", it'll bring a smile to your face.
