Let it be known that I read the book when it first came out, many years ago. I had really liked the pace and the setting of the book, but I could not recall the details. Scorsese's big screen adaptation is not bad, but considering his recent work and the cast, I expected much more from this movie. The choice of mood-setting music was effective at times, and quite annoying at other times. The actors were good, but there were a lot of tell-tale visuals that revealed the twist early on in the movie. The person who I saw the movie with had not read the book and figured out the twist rather quickly. Again, not a bad movie per say, just not a good one either. 6/10. The overall pace wasn't good enough for such a page-turning book, and the script just did not capture the mood and setting and character enough.

They try and pack a book into a short 1-2 hour movie... It's obvious that they have to speed up the pace or you'll never enjoy it. You should know that a book can overall describe a character way better than a visual. Never expect more from a movie based on its director and actors... this is everyone's first and greatest downfall.
Of course most big screen adaptations of books are nowhere near the feel of the book. But it can and has been done, and I need only look at the previous two Lehane movie adaptations: Mystic River and Gone Baby Gone, both solid adaptations.
