    Seven Beauties

'Pasqualino Settebellezze' is a remarkable film from Lina Wertmuller who became the first woman ever to be nominated for an Oscar Best Director Award with this WW II drama. One big thing going for it is an indelible performance by then leading Italian heartthrob Giancarlo Giannini. We've seen films like this before, deserters and certainly concentration camps, but Wertmuller presents us with a totally amoral individual in a situation which she directs with a graphic honesty that might shock even some in 2016. The feature makes one stop and wonder the depths one will go in order to survive, no matter how degrading! The film is so engrossing that you hang on every image and word. I saw it in the original Italian with subtitles I ignored. The spoken Italian is so unmistakenly used to define place and character which one can't really get from subtitles. But make this a must see film. It will astound!
