This Ang Lee film is quite a powerhouse and one wonders how Ang Lee as a Korean has the perfect ability and temperment to understand American stories and translate them to the screen. The Ice Storm comes to mind as well as the amazing Brokeback Mountain. A few years ago Lee won his second Oscar as Best director for Life of Pi, again dealing with a culture not his own. In Ride with the Devil he tackles the Civil War, but not a retelling of the Civil War story but of a gang of hooligans or misfits who learn a precious great deal about the idea of the responsibility of an individual and his or her contribution to the greater good of the whole!
