Howard Hawks, who never won an Oscar for direction much like Hitchcock and many other greats was a man more capable than most in filming whatever crossed his mind: screwball comedies, dramatic films to westerns and more. He is at his best in his first western, RED RIVER, 1948, the John Wayne/Montgomery Clift saga of Cattle Lords and their expeditions along the famed Chisholm Trail. The pairing of the ultra-macho WAYNE with the shy, slightly neurotic CLIFT was a stroke of genius. It made MONTY a star! Wait till you dig deep into the plot for some very "neat" surprises. A MUST SEE FOR WESTERN FANS or for anyone with a dramatic bent. Two editions of RED RIVER exist and both are included in the new Criterion Collection of the famed Western.
