On a second viewing of PUNCH DRUNK LOVE, I realized I totally missed the point of this strange but ultimately satisfying film with Adam Sandler and Emily Watson. It's a love story at heart, albeit done in a bizarre manner, but with good performances and a load of added touches that truly won me over including the direction for which Paul Thomas Anderson won best director at Cannes in 2002, a very nice script, at times improvised and a musical soundtrack that almost makes the film worthy of being labelled a romantic musical comedy though no one breaks out into song. I will view this again to get the full impact of the film. Punch Drunk Love was also in final contention for the best film in the Palme d'Or category. A peculiar, often bewildering film containing so many themes Anderson has touched on before: like loneliness, bizarre conduct, a search and need for love and more. The film has a vibrant visual component with digital technology though in its infancy and to repeat, music I loved. I think the film will grow on me even more.
