Damn right it's pretentious, as it should be. I'll take pretentious Lars Von Trier over Hollywood remake/reboot/sequel number 50000 any day of the week! The story is about depression and thus it actually is somewhat depressing, but not as much as Spiderman 3 is depressing. The "end of the world" theme is more of an interesting device for the various characters to react to, and not so much an excuse for CGI explosions. Let's just say if you are a fan of Tarkovsky's "Offret", you can enjoy this film more than someone who thought "2012" was deep and thought provoking.
