I have admiration for “Mechanic: Resurrection”. Sure, some movies spend hours honing their craft to give you a feast for the eyes and others agonize over their scripts to ensure they deliver a clever product, but this film does neither. I compare this Jason Statham picture to a guy whose dating profile only displays pictures of himself shirtless, contains the bare minimum of characters required to register and sends you a message saying “Hey Baby, why don’t you drive to the liquor mart, get me a beer and come over to my place? ” This sequel to the 2011 film is devoid of any intelligence but so bold that you kind of have to give it praise.

Having faked his death and moved on from his profession as an assassin, Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) falls in love with a beautiful woman named Gina (Jessica Alba, still looking great in a bikini) When Bishop’s old associate Riah Crain (Sam Hazeldine) kidnaps Gina, Bishop must assassinate 3 men – and make the kills look like accidents – in order to get her back.

I don’t even know why they bothered with a plot for this film. It’s not like you believe the romance that develops between Alba and Statham and if you’re tempted to see action/heist picture, anything before the actual homicides is going to be dull. If you ask me, the film should’ve just been an anthology picture with Bishop pulling 4 or 5 jobs and a “Bishop will be back! ” conclusion.

I’ll give the film this: it delivers when it comes to the entertainment factor. Stuff blows up, gets turned into Swiss Cheese or set on fire frequently, Bishop kicks people in the face, shoots them in the head, skewers them with knives… and that’s before he does the “Mission: Impossible” style jobs. The man’s a killing machine; it’s just that sometimes he decides to do it quietly. I found the action sequences to be an enjoyable distraction and some of them get pretty creative.

When it comes to the jobs, they’re as laughable as the one-dimensional characters or the love plot. I know that Bishop is a super special awesome assassin that specializes in making his kills look like accidents (is that really something special though? I think there are only 2 kinds of hired guns: the ones who deliver a message by abandoning all subtlety, and those who take every precaution not to get caught) I still can’t believe the man could travel halfway around the world, buy hundreds of dollars’ worth of gear, scout a location, figure out his target’s schedule, come up with a plan that’ll satisfy his boss’ outrageous demands and pull it off… alone. In fact, he doesn’t really. The first murder doesn’t look like an accident at all. If I saw the body, I’d never consider anything BUT foul play. It’s absolutely ridiculous.

Theoretically, I could be the one at fault here, not the film. I haven’t seen the original “Mechanic”, or the remake from 2011. Perhaps I’m missing some fine bits of character development, subtle symbolism and a whole lot of inside jokes. I doubt it. I don’t like to describe movies as “dumb”. That’s what 5-year-olds do. But the word fits this film like a glove. “Mechanic: Resurrection” asks you to leave your brain at the door and then shoots it while you’re distracted by explosions and shiny things moving. Anything to prevent you from second-guessing any of the nonsense you just witnessed on your way out. As a bad movie, I found it enjoyable but I don’t know if I can recommend it even then. (Theatrical version on the big screen, August 28, 2016)
