Vincente Minnelli moves away from musicals to deadly serious material in LUST FOR LIFE, the unspeakably abysmal life of Master Vincent Van Gogh. Kirk Douglas becomes the very embodiment of Van Gogh in the greatest performance of his career. He lost the Oscar to the foot stomping nonsense of Yul Brynner in THE King and I. If interested in great screen characterization, this is one that has to be on your list! Luckily, Kirk was awarded many prizes for his role but lost OSCAR to yet another musical performance.
