    Last Cab to Darwin

Films of the Australian Outback have always been of interest to me, films I have seen that go back to Ted Kotcheff's Australian masterpiece of the 1970's and even Jenny Auguter in the brilliant 'Walkabout' by, I believe, Peter Weir... to more contemporary cinema. Though this Aussie area interests me on film, it would probably be somewhat of a curse to live in such a place. Again this film has very limited release as do any films that are of true value. One of the glories is how the DP captures the landscape in all its crustiness. It was refreshing to see some stars that looked like the genuine article, the film not relying on even one name star to draw in a wider audience. Its theme is certainly not new as it rages here in North America, both in Canada and the U. S. A. The flick can be somewhat sentimental as our protagonist is on his journey to fulfill his steadfast intention, but I would never call 'Last Cab' an intellectual feature though its basis lies in deadly serious material. Certainly, many parts of the film come off really well, but the whole is not, unfortunately, greater than its parts.
