    La La Land

There are people who don’t like musicals. For those who DON’T feel like missing out, there’s “La La Land”. It’s a serious contender for the year’s best film.

In Los Angeles, aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) bumps into jazz fanatic Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) and the two begin falling in love.

I've been starved for a film like this one. I wager you have too. I don’t want to see a story with lame couples that can’t be together because the girl is dating some jerk she has nothing in common with. I’m tired of seeing the guy walk halfway into a conversation and break up with the girl because of a misunderstanding that could be solved if people just talked. “La La Land” captures the euphoria present when that girl accepts your invitation to a date, the weird mix of exhilaration and nervousness when you first reach for that handsome guy’s hand in the movie theatre is right here. It’s that moment of electricity before a first kiss. These are abstract feelings, and sometimes, the best way to convey immeasurable aspects of humanity is with the outlandish. With song, and dance!

There is a plot here, one that we can all relate to. “La La Land” is about people falling in love in a world that doesn’t play by any rules. What if your sweetheart gets a scholarship in a different city? What happens when your career kicks off and hers doesn't? This film has plenty of nerve-wracking moments and they’re not because of any contrivances. You’re shaking in your seat because you want this couple to make it work. You want them to have a happy ending and what happier conclusion is there than a waltz together under the moonlight? In this way, it perfectly marries the reality and the fantasy.

The performances here are spectacular. Stone and Gosling are singing, dancing, and acting all at once. Now that’s craftsmanship. It makes the film a treat to watch, since it features amazing choreography from the very first frame, and a joy to listen to as well. There is a nice variety of musical numbers, the kind you want to listen to over and over. Altogether, shot expertly in long takes that allow you to grasp all of the complex footwork at play, it’s a film that’s too much for just one viewing.

“La La Land” is not a fluffy little picture with silly movement to the beat of popular songs. It’s passion on-screen, with a tight screenplay and an absolutely perfect ending. Damien Chazelle has made a gorgeous, joyful, gripping masterpiece. There’s layers to this film and great re-watch value. I sat down in a lousy seat and was worried I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself. I didn't just like it. I loved it. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 27, 2016)
