    King Kong

In creating his homage to 1933’s “King Kong” Peter Jackson may be slightly self-indulgent, but the results are worth it. A timeless story, great special effects, ample character development, abundant heart, and endless passion injects new life into the Eight Wonder of the World. This trip is a great way to get ready for "Kong: Skull Island".

Anne Darrow (Naomi Watts) is at the end of her rope. After being spotted by equally desperate filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black), she accepts the lead role in his jungle adventure/romance. As she falls for the film’s screenwriter, Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody), neither suspect that the island they are headed for is a land that time has forgotten, a savage place where a giant gorilla named Kong (played fabulously through motion capture by Andy Serkis) rules.

Everything about this modern adaptation (still set in 1933) is bigger than it was in the past. The film’s running time has been significantly inflated, now running at 187 minutes. Your butt’ll be sore but the upside is that the time on-screen allows you to understand “King Kong”. This is a heartfelt drama, an adventure on an island populated by prehistoric monsters, a story of man’s hubris and obsession. It speaks of the magic and mystery that is, unfortunately, disappearing from this world and even dips into horror territory. That amount of juicy material earns your time. I never felt like checking my watch.

“King Kong” is thick with content. You get the impression that Skull Island is a forgotten world within a forgotten world. You’re filled with wonder as it produces one fantastical beast after another, each ready to open its maw and swallow up our heroes. Pure exhilaration is delivered as one action scene will end and the picture will cut to a different character knee-deep in absolute danger. In terms of sheer spectacle, it blows you away. Once the thrills begin, they never stop. When you think there’s no way it can top itself, there it goes. This is due to the characters. You don’t just get to know one or two, you come to understand pretty well all of them and when someone goes down, you feel it. It's exciting and at the same time, this is a very melancholic story. By having our heroes arrive on Skull Island, you sense that they’ve disturbed the last mystery on Earth. After this, nothing will be the same.

As an homage to the original “King Kong” (a truly magical film), this remake is a triumph. It perfectly captures the old-timey feel of these “Lost World” films but also has the intelligence to look at it from a modern perspective. Then there are the special effects, the very best 2005 could deliver is on display. This much passion is infectious. Don’t get warded off by the epic running time, “King Kong” is a loving, expertly architected film. (Theatrical version on the big screen, February 26, 2017)
