    Idle Hands

"Idle Hands" is an effective horror comedy with good special effects and more than a few laughs. While it leans a lot more towards the comedy aspect than the horror one, it has some fine gory moments and a few jump-worthy scenes to satisfy your craving for a scary film. They say that idle hands are the devil's playthings, and whose hands are more squandered than those of a lazy stoner teenager like Anton (Devon Sawa) On Halloween night, after a series of grisly murders he realizes that his right hand has become possessed. You would think that cutting it off would help the situation, but despite Anton and his friends' best efforts, it goes on a bloody rampage.

I'll give this to the movie; it's pretty creative as far as concepts go, particularly towards the end. I like the Idea of a killer body part running around, that's got a lot of potential for comedy or ridiculous 50/60's style horror. As for the humor, a large portion of the jokes are aimed at the stoner crowd but there's more here than just jokes about having the munchies. Those types of gags don't appeal to me particularly and I was glad to find that there was enough comedic material outside of this genre to keep me (and presumably other audience members) entertained. There is a lot of physical and slapstick humor for instance and when that's well done its worth a million jokes about bags of weed being confused for oregano. I particularly enjoyed Elden Henson and Seth Green as Anton's two dumb friends. All of the actors do a good job creating convincing characters while struggling with the evil hand, even Jessica Alba in one of her early roles. The makeup is excellent and while there a few special effects that are rough around the edges, most of the time they are convincing. Story-wise it might be the brightest bulb in the drawer, but this is a solid film and I certainly had a good time with it. (On DVD, December 31, 2012)
