    Hyena Road

I had low expectations for Hyena Road. The trailers weren't great and the reviews were very mixed. Well, though it had many great moments, Hyena Road is a very mediocre war film.

The acting was mostly bland. Other than Paul Gross, the lead actor, the acting was very meh. The characters were extremely forgettable and bland as well. I didn't care about them whatsoever.

The plot had potential to be excellent, but it was just a bland "mission" story. It got boring and the pace was frequently slow. The love subplot was atrocious and the relationships between the characters weren't great.

The direction by Paul Gross was very hit and miss. Some action scenes were very suspenseful and effective, and others were full of shaky-cam and just didn't work. There are also many awkward scenes that just made me uncomfortable.

The reason that Hyena Road gets a 5/10 though is that there are many scenes that are flat-out amazing. Some action scenes are excellent and suspenseful and sometimes the emotion really hits home. The final 10-15 minutes of the film are incredible. They are action-packed, emotional and extremely well handled. I wish the rest of the film was like that...

Overall, Hyena Road is a dull, mediocre war film that has many fantastic moments. Unfortunately, those moments are overshadowed by bad acting, forgettable characters and a slow, clichéd story. Rent it if you're interested.

I suspect by your age, that Hollywood hype and all the accompanying drama would be far more exciting as it was for me at that age. However, I feel the beauty and excellence of this film lies in its uniqueness of realism, being natural and being "it is what it is", based on much research, trips to that region, interviews with soldiers, rules of engagement... Even the "love subplot" was probably depicted the only way it could be on a base that was mostly male and with policy and procedures that needed to be followed. Things could turn on a dime as seen and when you had to gear up-you had to get going. It's a totally unpredictable setting with normal human beings just trying to make a difference or believing that they could. I think age helps you to understand things better in the world, i.e., more knowledge, experience... Keep writing because I think you have some good writing skills. (not that I'm an expert)
