Now that I’ve seen “Heat”, I get it. This movie… is awesome. There’s plenty of iconic moments and lines for you to select as your favorite. The action is intense. You’ve got legendary performers on the big screen and a killer of an ending.
Neil McCauley (Robert DeNiro) and his crew of professional thieves: Chris (Val Kilmer), Trejo (Danny Trejo), Michael (Tom Sizemore) and Waingro (Kevin Gage) make a tiny but critical mistake when they pull off their latest job. As Lieutenant Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) begins circling every closer to their upcoming operation, they begin to feel the heat.
I find that sometimes it’s hard to get invested in these types of films, the ones where we follow a bunch of criminals looking to get away scot-free while the rest of us have to work hard at our 9-to-5 jobs."Heat" turned me around by taking the time to develop McCauley, and by extent his crew. The quiet scenes allow us to understand why we should care about their plight. When things go bad and people need to die, it’s nothing personal. It’s all part of the job for them. When things go right they’re very professional and they goal is never to have anyone get hurt. So really, when things go awry, it’s kind of your fault as an audience member. Yeah, I said it. You want them to be caught right? Well, that means something’s got to go wrong. Sure, things’ll get ugly but look on the upside. That big shootout in the streets; isn’t it exciting? Don’t you find the game and cat-and-mouse between Lt. Hanna and McCauley delightful? All of the planning, weaving and dodging necessary to put together the big score, it's great stuff. You want to see that.
The further along “Heat” goes, the better it gets. The movie runs nearly 3 hours long. A little daunting for some, but I would've been up for even more. All the little details as Lt. Hanna puts together his ultimate trap for McCauley is captivating. Seeing these two adversaries, people who respect each other but in the end will have no bones about ensuring that only one makes it out alive (that’s what they say anyway, I couldn’t foresee how it was going to end) it forces your eyes open no matter how late your show may start. All that buildup serves to make the ending one that will be burned into your mind.
You should see "Heat"; if only so you can do your best imitation of an infuriated Al Pacino without feeling ashamed. The big scenes in this picture move so quick there's no way you can catch it all at once, meaning there's good re-watch value here too."Heat" is action packed. It's also eloquent, even thoughtful when necessary. (Theatrical version on the big screen, February 5, 2017)
