"Hackers" might not technically reflect what computer hacking is really like but it's pretty fun and has a lot of visual style, a must for movies about people typing on computers all day. Dade "Zero Cool" Murphy is a prodigal hacker who has finally gotten off of his no-computer parole (As per a judge ruling) Now 18, Dade befriends a group of hackers at his high school and, while proving his computing skills, stumbles upon a corporation extortion scheme.

The characters in the film are colorful and fun to follow, the fantasy hacking elements are amusing and there are a lot of cool set pieces, like the letter towers and the giant computer lab that form the "action" bits of the film. I particularly a montage where Dade and his love interest/rival Kate (Angelina Jolie) disrupt the life and cyber identity of hacker public enemy #1 (Agent Gill, played by Wendell Pierce) Story-wise the relationship between the characters developing is enjoyable to watch and although the villain isn't particularly interesting he's a competent foil for our protagonists. Some of the film, particularly towards the end where hackers of the world unite and some major security breaches happen without much effort is pretty ridiculous and for a film about computer geniuses it really doesn't feel like the main players are true wiz-kids that are spinning circles around the normal populace. The performances vary pretty wildly, with most characters being good and convincing, but a few performances aren't very good (I'm singling out Albert Watson who is awful).

"Hackers" is not a great film and often reinforces a lot of hacking stereotypes as we've come to know them today. If you think this movie is "realistic" then it just proves that most people don't really understand what hacking a computer is really like. I don't know the first thing about breaking into cyber security, but even I know that. As a piece of that time in our history where computers and the internet weren't all that common and acted more like magical boxes than actual functioning machines, it's worth at least taking a look to see if it's your kind of thing.
