    Groundhog Day

I know that “Groundhog Day” is a classic. Believe it or not, I’d never seen it before. I know! In fact, I came in knowing very little about the picture. This means that when I say it's great, you know it's not nostalgia talking and neither is it an acquired taste.

Cynical and arrogant weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to report on Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania‘s Groundhog Day festival. The next day, he wakes up to find out that it’s once again February 2nd. In fact, tomorrow never comes. He’s caught in a time loop where it’s always Groundhog Day.

This picture’s got a dynamite premise but it’s about more than that. The first thing that I like about this movie is that it’s not really about the time loop thing. It is in the sense that the movie is all about Phil dealing with the boredom and opportunities that stem from the fact that he has to re-do the same day over and over, but it’s more about the characters that live in this day. Don’t worry about why or how this is happening. When the movie begins, Phil is unlikable. He’s negative, full of himself, impatient, arrogant. You basically get to see him live out a thousand lifetimes as he learns to deal with his new situation. How would someone react to being stuck in this small town for that long if their actions had no consequences? "Groundhog Day” explores this idea very well. It ranges from the comical to the heartwarming and even the tearjerking. It’s not just a one-note movie that asks you to sit back and have some laughs. There’s some profound stuff here, particularly Phil’s interactions with his co-worker Rita (Andie MacDowell.)

There’s a lot going on in this movie. I think it’s a great conversation-starter. Murray is very good in the role and gets to show off his range by the way his character evolves. In a way, it’s a clever twist on the “Christmas Carol” storyline, a much better one than “Scrooged”. It’s certainly more original and funny, also much more romantic and meaty than the similar “50 First Dates”, made years later. This picture’s sharp and clever, I like the message and the characters. I laughed frequently. I perfectly understand why people watch this film annually. Until they release a decent horror movie set on February 2nd about killer mutant groundhogs, I’m onboard for joining you to watch “Groundhog’s Day” once every year. (Theatrical version on the big screen, February 4, 2017)
