With a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation, avant-garde filmmaker Maya Deren traveled to Haiti begin to assemble an anthropological study of Voudun. She gathered the footage over the course of visits to the island between 1947 and 1952. Dance and choreography were foundational to her artistic practice, which also melded them with her experimental filmmaking into a form of "choreocinema." This significantly shaped the footage she collected for DIVINE HORSEMAN.
