William Wyler's brilliant narrative about how a police precinct is run, warts and all. We get a taste of the home life and the pressure can add up to humongous problems. One had to be very careful with the screenplay, so many words and phrases relating to anything sexual could not be used. There were Oscar Nominations almost all round for principal and supporting players. I loved the way the film moved along, seeing the usual petty thieves or miscreants of the law, but its biggest asset was to show that these detectives and policemen had a life outside the jurisdiction of the precinct, something not done very often.
