I was pumped to see Deadpool. Over the years, he has become my favourite superhero. When the test footage was released, I was so excited to see Deadpool on the big screen that I was pissing myself. After the BEST advertising I've ever seen for a movie, the time has come. Well, after having finally seen the film TWICE, I could safely say that Deadpool is a total blast!
Ryan Reynolds IS Deadpool. In terms of casting, he's up there with J. K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson and Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. He pulls this eccentric and energetic character off flawlessly and also totally nails the dramatic scenes. The entire cast works in favour of the film. Ed Skrein, Stefan Kapicic, Brianna Hildebrand, T. J. Miller and Morena Baccarin all give excellent performances. A lot of these people haven't done many other films, and I hope to see them more!
The plot of Deadpool is pretty clichéd, but the film embraces those clichés and makes for a nearly perfect origin story. However, the best part of Deadpool is the writing. I was frequently laughing my ass off! What the writers pulled off here astounded me. I can't believe that Fox actually green-lit this film! It's vulgar, but utterly hilarious. The forth-wall breaks, references and easter eggs laced throughout Deadpool makes this film one that you could watch over and over again! The musical score, CGI and effects all worked beautifully too.
I have two main issues with Deadpool. Firstly, there was a block of around 20 minutes that didn't entertain me as much as the rest of the film. The tone completely shifted and I didn't really laugh during this chunk. Instead, it was mainly getting exposition done so we could return to the main plot. Though it was still very good, it just didn't mesh well with the rest of the film. Secondly, I really wanted more of everything. This isn't really a bad thing, but more jokes and action would have made for a perfect film!
Overall, though, Deadpool is incredible. A gut bustingly funny screenplay, fantastic performances, and brutal action make for a unique superhero film that sets the bar for future rated-R superhero movies! See it!
