    Cyrano de Bergerac

There have been a number of features based on Edmond de Rostand's famous French play from the silent screen version to the very well done 1950 version in which José Ferrer won an Oscar as Best Actor. The 1990 French version with Depardieu and Anne Rochet might be the most authentic, Depardieu giving an indelible Cyrano helped immensely by the original French language play which is so poetic. Mr. Depardieu was really up for this role and played it to the hilt winning an Oscar Nomination in 1990 as Best Actor. Even Steve Martin adapted the famous play, this time naming the film Roxanne after the lead female character. The only criticism I have is that I know the subject matter so well having read the play several times and seeing all the Cyrano adaptations. It does tend to lose some luster with constant re-filming.
