A cleverly made and decent movie with a few flaws. Well thought out and acted with an old premise infused with a new twist. Having said that, Cloverfield misses the mark in many ways as well. The AA rating significantly dampens the fear and horror of the film and thus what is left is something that is just not terrifying at all, in any way. Also, the films shakey handycam approach to telling the story is so extreme that it is ineffective. There are many parts where there is literally nothing to see on the screen but violent, dark, blurry movements. While this filming technique is probably intended to increase the tension and provide realism, it only serves to frustrate the audience and detract from what could be genuinely interesting moments in the movie. One can only hope that if there is a sequel, conventional filming methods will be utilized.
