I didn't have great expectations for the 2015 adaptation of Cinderella. I'm not a big fan of Kenneth Branagh and Cinderella was never one of my favourite stories growing up. I was curious how they would adapt the story, though. Well, I'm actually very surprised to be saying that Cinderella (2015) is an amazing fairy-tale adaptation with a huge heart!
THE GOOD:
+ The cinematography and CGI are beautiful. Each landscape seemed like a painting and the effects were jaw-dropping.
+ All of the acting was great. Lily James was a surprisingly excellent Cinderella and showed lots of emotion. Helena Bonham Carter, Richard Madden and Stellen Skarsgard were also fantastic. The real standout here though is Cate Blanchett as the evil step-mother. Her performance is over-the-top in all of the best ways.
+ The runtime is perfect and the pace is constantly fast.
+ The story was maintained and there were a few details that were added to make the story make more sense.
+ The costume design, makeup, musical score and editing are all superb.
+ Kenneth Branagh directs this movie nearly perfectly! I was surprised on how well he set up his shots. The movie was consistently entertaining too.
+ The movie maintains the classic Disney magic and wonder as well as charm.
THE BAD:
- Zero risks were taken with Cinderella. Everything is the same as the classic cartoon. I understand that it's a family movie and they couldn't do all that much, but I would have liked to see some chances being taken.
- The writing was mostly good, except for some laughably corny dialogue here and there.
Overall, Cinderella (2015) is the best fairy-tale adaptation I've seen in a very long time. It was entertaining, charming (pun intended), visually beautiful and immensely enjoyable. See it with your family!
RATING: 8.75/10.
