Begin Again is about a chance encounter between a disgraced music-business executive and a young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan turns into a promising collaboration between the two talents. I had modest hopes for this musical dramedy. It comes from a great writer and has quite good talent involved. Well, Begin Again is a wonderful feel-good comedy and happens to be one of the biggest surprises of 2014! The acting is quite good. Mark Ruffalo plays a drunken music producer very well and gives a very likeable performance. Kiera Knightly is the star here, and sings beautifully while giving a loveable performance. The supporting cast including Adam Levine, Cee Lo Green and Hailee Steinfeld do very nice jobs as their roles. The best part of this movie is easily the superb music. All of the songs are very well placed in the film and really is very well written. The soundtrack may be one of the best this year. Another excellent part of the movie is the writing and the direction. John Carney proves to be a worthy director whom I would love to see much more from. The story is also unique and interesting, with some spins on the average romantic comedy. There are a few minor problems here. First off, the tone seems a little inconsistent. It is dark sometimes and very lighthearted at others. This would be fine if they were balanced well. Secondly, there were a few scenes that seemed unnecessary and a little long. Overall, Begin Again is a great feel-good romantic dramedy with incredible music and an interesting story. See it if you have a passion for music or enjoy romantic comedies.
