In 1974, the Carnation Revolution brought about the end of both Portugal's reigning dictatorship and the nation's control over a number of African colonies. The ensuing independence process drove hundreds of thousands of African and Portuguese people to seek refuge in Lisbon and, without housing support, build their new homes on the city's outskirts.
