    Le film relate l'histoire de la chanteuse rock internationalement ignorée Hedwig et de sa quête de la gloire et de l'amour. Garçon à la naissance, Hansel, dont le rêve est de trouver son autre moitié, subit une opération pour changer de sexe. Elle marie ensuite un soldat américain et saute le mur de Berlin pour retrouver la liberté...
