Rising from the ashes of the punk revolution, a fresh subculture of flamboyant artists and fashionistas emerged on the streets of East London in the late 70s. Known as the New Romantics, they came dressed to the nines in a styled, genderbending response to the anarchistic "anti-fashion" of the previous generation. Repositioning the New Romantics as an art movement rather than a fleeting pop-cultural one, director Kevin Hegge celebrates the outsized personalities (Boy George, Spandau Ballet, Derek Jarman) that defined the era while shining a long-overdue spotlight on its lesser-known, yet equally influential, contributors.
