This movie was the best of it's kind, so far this year, off the hook must see "300"
| 9/10 | altonwhitefish@ - first review 17.3.2007 - age: 18-25 |
A very sad movie that tries to maintain an utmost suspense during its entire two hours of runtime. Everything everyone says tries to be profound, symbolic, mythic but starts to annoy after the first half-hour. The extreme close-ups are overdone, the cinematography is pompous and overelaborate, the filters they've overloaded the picture with turn garish and exhaust the eye. This film is an insult to a cinematographer and an offense to an Iranian. Interesting the coincidence between such demonization of the Persian Empire and the potential war campaign against Iran brewing in the USA... And when you disillusion yourself from 300's pathetic representation of History, you find yourself weary after the first fifteen minutes of slow-motion battle scenes, which remain the only promising content of such movies. What a waste

Crap. Total crap. Sexist, racist, homophobic, pointless, mindless drivel. OK, so it's based on a comic book that's based on a film Frank Miller saw when he was a kid which was based on the age-old Thermopylae story. It didn't have to be good history -- though leaving out the fact that the Spartans forced the Thebans to hang around by keeping hostages and the Thespians (who weren't glory-hungry, death-obsessed psychopaths like the Spartans) volunteered to stay was kind of a big omission. But if you're going to use comics for a storyboard, try to move beyond the stylistics. The film looked like a tepid Gladiator remake, the acting was god awful, and the characters somehow more 2d than the comic. Never again, Gerard Butler -- Reign of Fire, Timeline, and now this. Horrible and pointless. As a Spinal Tap review once said," swimming in a sea of retarded sexuality"

It's a fun rollercoaster rid. Enjoy it for what it is. Fast paced fun and lots of eye candy. Don't expect it to be like "The Pianist" and you'll be wowed.

Best 10$ ive ever spent. Everything you could possibly wish for in a good movie, except if your a stuck-up history teacher, or if you dont like blood, but even then, ladies had 300 6pacs constantly on sight, they cant say they didnt like that, PLUS! AMAZING SOUNDTRACK!!
| 10/10 | gagapatate@ - first review 17.3.2007 - age: 18-25 |
The beginning was horrible. I almost left. But then half way through they start fighting. Some good battle scenes but they could of made them alot better. It had some gut talking through them all. They should of put music on during it or something because it made them kind of boring.

[...] If this was based on a comic book does that mean it is based on a true story. I mean I know that 90% of comics are based on facts [...] but this one obviously wasn't. So just chill out and get back to your tennis lessons and chick flicks. Oh yeah the movie rocked.

Very well acted. Awesome action scenes and the cinematography was exquisite.

I found this disappointing, probably because I'd heard only good things about it going in. It was very stylish but there was no substance. Barely any story whatsoever. The depiction of the Persians didn't bother me because it's not meant to be accurate and the Spartans don't come across that great either (baby killers!) But overall I was a little bored and the amazing visuals didn't make up for the lack of plot.
| 6/10 | yager@ - first review 17.3.2007 - age: 26-35 |
Historical facts... Wow you guys [...] Is this an historical movie or a documentary? Nope it's a story BASED on historical facts... It is an embellished and exaggerated version of what happened but again, guess what, no one knows what really happened. You should of known what you were going to see if you thought it was accurate. I give this movie a big 10/10... It's what I was expecting, nice visuals, cool fight scenes, heroic movie.
| 10/10 | kraft_danner@ - 2 reviews 17.3.2007 - age: 18-25 |
I get a kick out of reading the negative reviews by some people especially the Persians who deny the existence of the battle at Thermopylae ever occurred, a myth. Denying the event does not prove it did not happen. I know it is not a good feeling when approx. 5000 Greek soldiers hold back an Army of millions. I would hold my head low also if I was Persian. No, and Darius never went to Greece and lost most of his forces, that’s also a myth. Get over it, [...]. The movie was extremely entertaining. As far as historical accuracy goes, it wavered on some things and was surprisingly accurate on others. I think if people want to know all the accurate events that transpired, read the book by Dr. Paul A. Cartledge, he is at the University of Cambridge and Hellenic Parliament Global Distinguished Professor at New York University. I’m sure you could get it at a library..

Enjoyed it completely. May not reflect actual history but still an excellent movie. More like this should be made. Cinematography, special effects are excellent. Haven't enjoyed a film like this in a long time. A must see.

If you're looking for historical accuracy, a movie theater is not the place you should go. There's a historical background to the story, but this movie is about the legend, about characters bigger than life. If what you are looking for is to be entertained, then you will be entertained. That is all this movie is about and it does it to perfection.

Saw it a second time today, so I'm not sure whether I've already written a short comment, I hope not. I love this movie. It is pure action, and therein it nails it. I could see it in HD in an IMAX cinema and it just rocks, what can I say, the effects and the graphics are great, the colors are breathtaking. Throughout it is just amazing.
| 10/10 | raphael@ - 41 reviews 17.3.2007 - age: 18-25 |
It had a fast pace with a lot of action but I thought the story could have been written with a bit more detail, as it was 90% about fighting and that is why 300 won't win awards. Don't get me wrong it is a good movie but it comes up short in what could have been done to make this the best film of 2007.
| 7/10 | rpomanti@ - first review 17.3.2007 - age: 36-49 |
A Good movie to see on the big screen rather than waiting for it on DVD. And this is a movie, where there would be inaccuracies. Enjoy it as a story with great scenery, gory fighting, somewhat melodramatic dialogue, and not some anti-persian propaganda. But to point out one thing, the actor playing Xerxes can't act.
| 8/10 | ventura23ca@ - 15 reviews 17.3.2007 - age: 26-35 |
First scene kinda bored at the end it's a great scene good action but the lord of the rings is the bestest.
| 6/10 | chuckycharming@ - 7 reviews 17.3.2007 - age: 18-25 |
I give it a 1- the one point being a rather pleasent shot of Gerard Butler's nakedness early on in the film... other than that- it's a disgracful copy of gladiator meets lotr meets even star wars! No amount of titilating 14year old boy drooling at gore could save this movie. Hollywood truly has run out of new ideas.

This is excellent entertainment! Beautifully rendered and it's quite wonderful to see all of the Quebecois names in the cast. We should be proud that this movie was made right here. And to all of the people who said "it isn't historically accurate", stay home watch the History channel... You obviously missed the point.

A GREAT MOVIE! And that's what it's suppose to be not a documentary or an accurate historical story. People who want a documentary go back to your books or sit and watch the history channel. Eye candy for the women and nonstop action for the guys.

This movie was excellent, I want to see it again. It had action from beginning to end, the effects were amazing... some people say it isn't historically accurate, but who cares? Excellent movie. Watch it. Now.
| 10/10 | 87auxiliary@ - 9 reviews 17.3.2007 - age: 13-17 |
Action action action. The movie is what it is; a battle to the end. The story is old as time, a king fighting for his country, so they don't waste time on the politics of the battle, just the battle itself and that is what you get to see in the movie.

This movie was very entertaining! It was macho without the cheese. It had amazing cinematography and a great story line. I would recommend this movie to anyone who liked things like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator or Braveheart. This one surpasses them in cinematography though! Enjoy!!!

Wow... it is a great movie. I've learned in primary school ancient history and I remember the teacher told us about the spartans that they had a reputation of being very strong and fierce in battle. This movie shows just that and it is based on real facts. I just loved the fighting scenes... it was great for me.

Total eye-candy! Gerard Butler is HOT! Stunning effects and graphics. Looks almost like a video game at times. A very simple story line but it packs a punch with how heroic and loyal the Spartans were back then.
