Extremely good movie, great acting, really nice setting. Very believable movie. A+

Why is Mauricio Amuy Tenorio listed as "starring" when he is not in the film's end credits or in IMDb? According to my research and checking with Mel Gibson's company he was just a local extra used for one day in the film's trailer.

A difficult film to rate. On the one hand, Gibson's meticulous attempt to recreate 16th century Central or South America - complete with indiginous languages - is impressive. Seeing the stepped pyramids come to life, and seeing the infamous sacrifices in high-definition offer a new dimension to our picture of "history." There are some pretty decent action and chase scenes, too. But overall, the film leaves you wondering whether the story really needed 2:18 to tell. Not a lot happened and there are some sequences which I suspect have more to do with Gibson showing off some cinematography than with plot.

Despite the fact that we are not completely certain of the degree of the violence of Mayan society , it doest matter. Man is violent animal , always was and always will be. This film tells a tale of human struggle and it does it well with great acting, great sound, great visuals and great action. I will admit that the wife and child in the pit was overdone but no film is perfect. It is so refreshing to not know any of the actors (see ONCE WERE WARRIORS). To all you historical skeptics start reading between the lines and try to be aware of the big picture.

Loved the movie, got involved with the characters, good acting and amazing cinemetography.

I thought the History books said that the Mayans were an advanced civilization as opposed to a bunch of brutal bloodthirsty savages. No? This movie sure does try quite hard to shock and excite you but I don't think it works out on that front. However, visually, the movie is a real feast for the eyes. Mel Gibson is a hell of a filmmaker in that regard. It's really too bad that Mel Gibson got so much bad press for his personal life and remarksbecause he's quite gifted behind a camera lens. This movie really needed to be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated. It just doesn't translate well to your home television. It really succeeds in making you feel that you are there.

I know this movie got bypassed by many because of the Mel Gibson scandal but it really is brilliant so see it if you haven't already!

Mel Gibson is quickly becoming one of my favourite directors. His films are simply beautiful. I know some will criticize him of trying to make every shot essential to the film, and in some ways they are right. Where some would say this is over the top, for me, this is what does it. I love his movies because they are an experience. You don't just watch his movies, you enter them. This tale is no different. Amazing!

It's a wonderful film, its first time talking about the original people of America, we didn't know a lot about this historical period and iI think that Gibson take a risk to make a such film, and it was just great.
| 10/10 | eid14800@ - 2 reviews 9.7.2007 - age: 36-49 |
Mel Gibson just made a great movie. This movie will grip you tightly and make you question what is important in life and what matters most. I think the scenery was one of the best pasts, especially around the temples. Costume and makeup were excellent as well. I hope Mel continues down the road of making movies that other directors probably aren't willing to try. If you're fine with subtitled movies you should enjoy this one!

Who cares if it isn't 100% historically accurate? Sometimes you have to bend the truth to make a story more exciting. From start to finish, this movie is an incredible thrill-ride!

Wow, Mel Gibson is a modern Shakespeare. Though bloody and all, this movie's a great illustration of the Aztec/Maya carnage. There were a few stupid moments like in any movie, but it doesn't matter.

The way the story is made is pretty good. I really liked the action sceens and specialy the ritual. It's amazing.

Mel Gibson is an excellent director. No doubt there. The movie was graphic and profound. I found the ending a little too Hollywood but it was a happy ending of sorts. Well done overall.

Apocalypto is very ingenious, it's something new, a real movie using image and body language like ways of communication. The image is very interesting presented, in a very dynamic way. The rithm of the image is like a language in that movie. A very interesting alternance between primplan grossplan and general plans. Apocalypto is a movie which will mark a step in film history, even if it was not rewarded with an Oscar! I don't know if it's historically correct but in that movie the time is compressed, so in any history it will count just as a moment.

I shouldn't have expected better from the man who brought us The Passion of the Christ, but I'd hoped that once he'd left the realm of his personal antisemitic bigotry he'd be more rational. Faint hope. I had many problems with this film, but the big one was the cultural innacuracies around brutality. While I'd be loathe to associate any real nation with Gibson's two dimensional interpretation of mesoamerican culture, the constant blood baths and the ritual human sacrifice brings this closer to an Aztec society than anything else. The Aztecs were - at the time of the European invasion - relatively new in mesoamerica, themselves brutally subjugating the previous nations in that area, and human sacrifice was part of the traditions which led them to do so. As such it is reflected in their art - whether it be depicting mythological or historical images - and even in their architecture. The theory that the Mayans also performed routine human sacrifice, however, hasn't been current for quite some time. The only evidence to support it was the fact that there were incomplete and disarranged skeletons in the burial chambers of the Mayan nobility, however recent research into similar disarray in the burial tombs of Babenberg and Hapsburg royalty from the tenth to the thirteenth century in what is now Germany (for which we have a great deal of extant documentation on the mortuary-practices) shows that it can quite easily be attributed to the damage and loss associated with moving the remains after burial. Given that the Mayan remains also show no consistent signs of violence, it's extremely unlikely that they performed human sacrifice.

Good movie to see for the cinematography, special effects and the intense scenes with the Mayan civilization. Also, enjoyed how the movie evolved whereby the man shows his extreme willpower to survive to return to the love of his woman.

Another twisted, unimaginative and limited perception by Mel. Just because someone has the money to make movies, doesn't mean they should. I should have learned my lesson after seeing passion of Christ. Oh well. That being said, I saw it for free.

This is the best movie I've seen in some time! The only reason that it won't win an oscar is because of Mel Gibson being out of favor with the public. All aspects of this epic were amazing!

Very cruel, too much running and walking through the forest, they could have made the movie shorter. But costumes and acting were great. Not much of a story though.

This genre of movie should be explored further. Picture your every-day action movie (like a Die Hard for example) against an unfamiliar yet intriguing backdrop. Despite Gibsons over-use of blood (as usual) the thrill of the chase combined with the mysticism of the ancient Mayans combined with some prophetic spiritual foreshadowing makes it an action movie with a decent plot. Definitely worth watching.
| 7/10 | deefleparde@ - 30 reviews 27.1.2007 - age: 26-35 |
A very good movie. Heaps better than Mels last directing attempt, yet in the same style and feel. With no sort of narration or extra detail, we follow the characters with no more information than they themselves have. It makes it suspenseful and honest. It is a great topic and great spotlight on alternate cultures. Then Mel goes and adds too many Clichés and old school Hollywood writing and leaves it full of mistakes.

Extremely impressed! Even though I normally completely detest subtitles, I surprisingly really enjoyed this movie. The film was full of intense action and emotions. The astonishing sceneries alone are a good enough reason for you to go see it. The acting was very well done! I was amused at the fact that for a long period of time near the middle of the movie there was not very much dialogue, yet the audience was able to keep track of the story -the actor body language really said it all. Although I must admit that I had absolutely no concept of the Mayan culture before entering the theatre - this film might actually be the furthest from the truth, but to a little simpleton like me, it was impressive! Im certain that if you have any knowledge in the Mayan era you probably would frown at some scene because even to me, Gibson seemed to be pushing the truth a little. Then again, what good movie doesnt do that? I gave this movie an 8 because I was interested throughout the whole two hours, and even though I personally didnt mind all the gore of this movie, I think there might have been a bit too much blood for the average viewer..

Apocalypto was a good movie for a one time see. I enjoyed it thoroughly although there are a few bothersome scenes. If you have a weak stomach I wouldn't recommend it, but once you get past the gore it's good.

One thing is for sure making a movie like Apocalypto needs a lot of gutts and the gutts I mean is, firstly the subject you choosing, then shooting it in jungle language, I dont know what is the exact name of that Lingo but I m sure it is something which is only be spoken in jungles, , and then shooting it in the wild wild conditions of the forest, , Well lets put it in this way that making a movie on unusual subject is way harder then any other hollywood movie! so for that unusual element and handling that so intelligently makes me to salute every single person who is linked with Apocalypto! LAST but not Least to The director Mr. Mel Gibson who has once again shown his direction abilities and proved that no matter if he is doing on screen job or off screen he is excellent in both! So people I recommend this movie to all those who have not seen it yet and waiting it to come on dvd so it's not too late to go and watch it on big screen!! Thanks..
