I liked the movie. Credit goes to the director to transform Hardy's Wessex classic Tess to an acceptable Indian environment. As can be expected Hardy's novels are rather morose but shows the society's split between the rich and the poor. Rajasthan and Mumbai scenes were very nicely shown. I salute Michael Winterbottom and the acting of Frieda and Riz.

Although I liked seeing various parts of India, as well as Freida Pinto, the story became rather melodramatic toward the end, which ruined it for me. Basically, it's a story of obsessive love between a wealthy landowner's son and a poor rural woman. She falls under his spell and their initial love spirals downward. Not a very happy story.

Saw this during TIFF last year and I thought it was very well done. Acting is great. Very heavy film though as is the story it's based on.
