Never read the book even though I was supposed to in high school. Never saw any of the other versions. Didn't really like Baz Luhrmann's movie Moulin Rouge, so I didn't know what to expect. It had some elements of Moulin Rouge--particularly the excessiveness of the visuals which is both off-putting and enticing at the same time. It was overly long. It was a feast for the eyes. The acting-- especially Leonardo DiCaprio and Toby MacGuire-- excellent. This movie shows Leo in his prime both in looks and the development of his talent. He is perfect as Gatsby. This movie is definitely art-- it won't be to some people's taste or appreciation, but make up your own mind.

I came out of the movie unsatisfied. I've never read the book and had no idea what I was getting myself into. Went with three girls, two of which have both read the book and mutually agreed with one another that it didn't fully live up to the book. Felt like the movie dragged on, and felt like a 3 hour movie. I do have to give it some credit though. The casting was great, actors were ridiculously good in their roles, it was visually captivating, and the modern day soundtrack worked great with the time period of the movie. The only thing was the plot that bored me, it was quite slow.

This is a period film. Wardrobe was excellent. Casting and acting was great. The story was good. But I'm sorry, I couldn't get past the sound track. Gershwin is great and got about five minutes of work. Ives, Brahms, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, even Tchaikovsky would have also made excellent choices for this movie. But no, somehow, it was decided that rap would be it. Surprise - it just didn't work. What were they thinking!?!?

The spectacle was worth viewing -- surreal, garish, surgayified, anachronistic though it was. The only engaging performance was Carey Mulligan's as Daisy -- perhaps because she was the only one who never really adopted the camp style that ran through the movie. (The others could never quite shake it when they tried.) But that left her in an unresolved contradiction with her actual behavior (twice spurning "true love" for money) The ultimate fault is of course F S Fitzgerald's for an incoherent novel (which I never finished), decrying wealth and supericiality while offering no alternative to it.

Good example of Gatsby life. And his need for Daisy.

Held my interest throughout the whole movie. Beautiful love story. Acting was good.

I have read the novel twice, liked it better the second time (after 20 years) and saw the older movie. This was a great treat. Very entertaining. Great fun and drama. Very enjoyable.

Movie looks sharp, love the 1920’s period of New York. The story on the other hand I found very slow and kinda boring.
| 6/10 | unitz3@ - 48 reviews 14.6.2013 - age: 26-35 |
Although the trailer made this movie look like it was going to be a fast paced period piece, it lacked any real story to carry such a long movie. The whole story could have been made to a 1 hour tv episode and maybe then would be worth a watch if it was free, but I spent over half the movie waiting for the plot to thicken and get interesting before I finally gave up and just sat and enjoyed my popcorn as I waited for it to end. I found the book equally as lacking in meat but had hoped for more when condensed to a movie form.

I was disappointed. It's a classic, so I expected a great story. It wasn't. It was a little predictable and contradictory at times. It was still a decent movie, but nowhere near what I was expecting. :>

That was so bad my husband and I walked out after 1 hr and 15 min of complete boredom. The characters were all caricatures with absolutely no story line. The millions spent on the first 45 min could feed a nation but didn't do anything at all for our need to see a good movie. How did DiCaprio sign up for this!! Stupid!
| 3/10 | marni.a@ - 2 reviews 13.6.2013 - age: 50+ |
Great visuals but lacked emotional impact. I usually like DiCaprio but I didn't much connect with any of the acting in this film. The narrator served up some fairly cheesy lines and the movie seemed a fair bit too long.

Excellent movie, great actors, strong plot with morale. Better than the book. Will go see again.

Definitely must-see in theatres, just for the visuals. Pretty awesome that Jay-Z was one of the executive producers, it gave it an extra edge that made it better than the original in my opinion.

WELL it's mostly spectacle, and not so much about the plot... if you want to go see beautiful shots, beautiful people, and an a somewhat interesting story then Gooo.

I LOVED this movie!!! It was very visually appealing, the casting was spot on and the acting was amazing especially Leonardo Dicaprio as Jay Gatsby!
| 10/10 | jhjc@ - first review 9.6.2013 - age: 26-35 |
Ok Leonardo -- you "suited" the role extremely well -- and did I mention your suits were fantastic! Not to mention the staging -- it was a an excellent mix of Broadway and great cinematography, while portraying an age-old classic. Damn though, can't we re-write the ending?
| 9/10 | mac999@ - 7 reviews 9.6.2013 - age: 50+ |
This movie was beautifully shot. The choice of using modern day music instead of flapper music was inspired. A classic story brought to new life. I had always loved the Redford version of this film, but enjoyed this one equally for different reasons. Go see it on the big screen. It is worth it.

I haven't been this engrossed by a movie in a very long time. Every frame, every angle, every scene was filmed with passion and milked to its max. Where Moulin Rouge, in my opinion, was "over-the-top" done bad, Gatsby managed to put the "glam" on everything successfully. I hope Baz and Leo win an Oscar!
| 10/10 | crisbitz@ - 15 reviews 5.6.2013 - age: 26-35 |
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I thought mixing modern music with the 20s was an interesting twist like they did in Django Unchained. The acting was superb, really liked Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton and Toby Maguire. The storyline kept me interested and even though I didn't see it in 3D, I think it would be pretty awesome with all the fabulous party scenes. When is Leo going to win an Oscar? His performances are always fabulous!

Visually satisfying, decent storyline adaptation from the book, actress who played Gatsby's love interest was so fantastic in her portrayal of that character. The subtle expression of the emptiness of vast wealth was well done by the director.

I never read "The Great Gatsby" and as I understand it it's supposed to be one of the greatest literary achievements of all time. However, as I also understand it none of the past attempts at turning this supposed great story into a film have ever been truly successful. Now having said all that, after seeing this film I can honestly say that they should stop trying to make this story into a film. Even the ultra stylish way in which the film was visualized I didn't really feel saved what was a very dull and overly exaggerated performance. Anyway, the message was pretty evident, but the delivery wasn't all that impressive. To each their own on this one.
| 5/10 | buymebooks@ - 2 reviews 2.6.2013 - age: 26-35 |
Cinematography was terrible. Faces 3xHD, too much zooming in and out like a roller coaster shots. Distance house shots looked like models filmed through filtered lens. Acting, costumes were good but destroyed by photography. Excellent story totally wasted on this presentation.

Baz gives people a reason to see a movie on the big screen again. The big Hollywood block busters can be seen on TV and the experience will be the same. Hollywood can keep it's disaster, zombie, vampire porn. But Baz is all about glitz, glam and magic! He's like Busby Berkely, old school but using the technology and music of today. And the story was there and is rather current. Think of reality TV, the Kardasians? It's kind of the same story, social climbing using shady means; but instead we praise trashy socialites and y'all eat it up that "glamour"

I just saw the movie and I didn't like it. DiCaprio and the guy that tells the history are ok but I really didn't like the acting of his girl. Her acting was very poor and so the acting of the main actors around them. Music was not from that time and many of the things are not into the time of the history neither. I was expecting something better. It's like a modern version that don't fit well with the history. The photography is good and since in Mexico movies are totally inexpensive I could say that I had some fun.

Apparently, this movie is supposed to be based on a true story - but obviously, some of these should never be told. Although the acting was all good, McGuire & DiCaprio were the only ones that were depicted with any soul at all! I found the party scenes very unrealistic & over-acted. Would also have been nice to have the right music from that era playing. Walked out of the theatre feeling both angry & sad. As far as I am concerned, that is not a good movie! If I wanted that kind of feeling, I just have to look at all the horrid people & things going on in this era to bring me down! Perhaps the kind of despicable people portrayed in this movie were common at that time, as this same type were portrayed in "Chicago" the musical, but I would like to think that there were at least some good people living at that time!

I wasn't expecting much from this movie- but, I came out of the theater amazed. There are countless things I loved about the film: I like the ongoing theme about the true meaning of love, fame, the impact one has in society when one is prosperous (versus being poor) The costumes, makeup, cinematography was wonderful, including the music! I like how they incorporated music from today's generation- in my perspective, I feel like they put that purposely, to convey how the 1920s are similar to today's 21st century. People in clubs, or different festivals act in the similar way like that era (excessively drink, a lil rebel) Dicaprio & Maguire had better receive awards because they entirely deserve it!

This movie is a debacle - over-the-top effects, a ridiculous soundtrack, with little of the storyline of the book. I went to see it with a friend and he hated it too. When he asked me to post a reveiw, I asked him how many stars he would give it, he said "zero". When we talked afterward we both said we had wanted to leave - total waste of time, I could hardly wait for it to be over.

I felt that it was utterly distracting with the overblown visuals---scenery, sets, music, ambience ad nauseum, etc. etc. The story and actors were a backdrop to the "Great Artsy-fartsy" presentation. I was disappointed but had friends that loved it. If you are distracted by the slight of hand, it might work for you.

This movie is an overdone, unrelatable mess of cliches and pretty costumes. Did we really need contemporary music to make a timeless message resonate with this generation? I read this book in high school and am only in my 20s now and found it to be a stereotypical portrayal of what people think the youth today are stimulated by, as though we need an overload of special effects and "cool" music to keep our attention. I kept expecting the actors to burst into song and dance, because it seemed that at any moment the movie could become a ghastly musical. The special effects were cheesy and so obviously fake; the acting was sub-par, especially Toby; the characters were unbelievable, even the Great Gatsby. I am honestly appalled by the high ratings for this movie and my guess is that everyone was too blinded by the costumes and "impressed" by the Jay-Z soundtrack to notice that there was only a boring, shallow storyline underneath it all. Did not do the book justice.

What can I say? The 10/10 says it all. I was hardly expecting for it to be so good. I didn't like Moulin Rouge at all but I can't resist a film with DiCaprio so off I went. It's all there : the acting, the cinematography, the story. Enjoy!

I loved this movie... The director realizes that cinema is cinema and uses cinematic codes to their fullest extent. My eyes were dazzled by the range of camera angles, lighting, sets, costume, editing techniques, musical scores etc... For some, Baz Lurhman's excessive use of cinematic techniques is disturbing. But I see his over-the-top style in this way: he is making a film and is using the medium to its creative capacity. Leonardo is superb; the complexity of Gatbsy comes through in every facial expression... In all, such a wondrous and beautiful film. The director combines the slowness of narrative prose with the speed of cinematic montage, while fully engaging all our senses. As with Romeo and Juliet before, I did not want The Great Gatsby to end.

Sure hope the people in the parties during the first hour or so were having a good time, because for the theater audience it eventually bordered on boredom. The last half was good -- finally something besides the parties and some drama. Seems the whole movie could have been better with some deletions in the first half.

I must admit that I had a few reservations before seeing this movie since I am still traumatized by the endless stream of vivid images and booming scenes that was Moulin Rouge (don't even start me on Romeo+Juliet) Well same story here with the Great Gatsby: too extravagant for my taste and I am really doubt the 20s were that much roaring. I left before the ending of the movie because none of the characters was endearing enough, let alone deep, to endure this not so great movie; talk about some Lost Generation. Given the fact that one main theme of the movie was social climbing, I guess, featuring Jigga in most songs of the soundtrack couldn't have been a better idea. Acting wise, Leo did his thing as usual: he owned the movie, yet even he couldn't carry this movie alone on his shoulders. Isla Fischer was delightful, I was pleasantly surprised by her acting while I was disappointed by Carey Mullingan, which I really liked in Shame. As usual with all his sound and light gimmicks, Baz Luhrman is going to be nominated for best picture at this year's awards celebrations. Seriously, wait for the movie be released in DVD!
