When young Jay Moriarity discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson to train him to survive it. A teacher of mine told me that this movie was good. I trust his opinion, so I rented it. The only surfing movie I've actually ever liked was "Surfs Up", so I had no idea what to expect. This movie actually barely made any money at all, and was an utter fail. THE GOOD: Amazing cinematography, good acting, great soundtrack, true and inspirational story. THE BAD: The script was mediocre and the love story was so stupid. THE UGLY: The ending was badly executed. OVERALL: A pretty good film with good messages and great cinematography. RATING: 7.25/10.

Wow, I can't believe a 15 year old actually did this. It was kind of sad how he was more disciplined than his mother. He was such a good person and he died at 22! :( Overall I enjoyed this movie, very inspirational.

Very entertaining flic about surfing the el nino waves in California but the story is really about two guys and 2 gals who stand by their men through thick and thin. I loved it!

Excellent flic! Lots of great action in the surfing scene, not web surfing but real surfing on boards riding the BIG waves. I really enjoyed the thoughtful and tender moments of the film and the special bond between two men. Bravo!

Wow! What a delightful and tender film. This is a little gem of a movie that nobody even knew was hiding out there. A really excellent and heartwarming story.

A great movie about surfing; very spiritual, powerful and emotional. It's a great story; you get to know about Jay Moriarity. Gerard Butler's performance is great; I read that he got lots of training for this movie, he even got injured and they took him to the hospital. Don't miss it.

True story or not, this one could have been much better. The last 15 minutes did actually give some redemption to this flick, but overall I would place my main negative criticism on the backs of the two main actors.

How about the fact it is based on a true story. I grew up in Puyallup and have lived in Santa Cruz for the past 16 years. These people are real and I happen to know several people in the film... not just the characters and extras, but the people who really knew Jay. So to any negative BS... I say live like Jay.

The surfing and the scenery is amazing. The story is sweet - predictable, yes - if you've seen the preview/ trailer, you know what is bound to happen. My girlfriends and I all enjoyed it.

This movie, like its main character, was like a little boy with Daddy issues. Daddy left me; daddy doesn't love me. It attempts to keep pulling at your heart strings but results in a gooey made for Lifetime movie. The new adopted daddy comes riding in on a big wave to save the day. This movie will be a real hit with kids, women and metrosexual males with low "T". Save your money guys for some surfing lessons, that is unless your girlfriend drags you to this hairless sob-fest like mine did.

I really enjoyed this movie with a story to tell about a goal, determination, hard work, and commitment that made it happen; life lessons that were shared and wonderful scenery. The ocean is a very powerful force and so was this movie. Go see it!
