This was a nice "historical" gangster movie with an acceptable story line, and good action scenes. Ryan Gosling has a weird accent or way to talk that got a bit on my nerves though.

Worst Sean Penn movie ever. Sooo disappointed.

This movie was not bad, I think it had the potential to be a lot better. I think the role that Sean Penn played had to be his worst I've ever seen. No depth on acting in this role. The other characters seemed to definitely outshine him in this movie.

This one was rather hastily put together, I think. Interesting context.

I was bored out of my mind! I would have left the theatre if I hadn't been sitting in the middle of a row.

Movie was good, slow at times, guess they were building the plot, as it is based on a true story, guess it can't be all exciting all the time. Worth the watch in the theatres. Will see again when it comes out on DVD... Action sequences were awesome.

This period film (1950's) depicts Sean Penn as an evil, Irish Mafioso who is running the L. A. underworld. Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling are apparently rogue cops who work in an unofficial role to cause as much damage as possible to the underworld operations. The dialogue was not very original, the plot was predictable and the focus of the movie seemed to be to cram in as much violence as possible in the 2 hour film. Should be a popular film though with the teenage crowd.

Ryan Gosling is... Ryan Gosling, and Emma Stone is a babe. It has all the cliché gangster movie stuff, which makes it a little cheesy, but in a good way.

It was better than I expected. Favourite performance was Josh Brolin. Sean Penn was pretty scary especially those facial expression close up.

It was a solid movie but it could have been amazing so for me it was kind of a let down but was a good movie.

Reminded me of The Untouchables movie but The Untouchables was twice as good. Lots of violence and gun play. Not a good movie.

1st I would like to say thank you to Cinemaclock for the free tickets to the advance screening. =) A gangster flick... we've all seen dozen of them. This one was good although it didn't bring anything new to the genre. The plot was previsible. The good guys were quite good, as for Sean Penn he utterly bad as the vilain. I enjoyed my evening, but the movie was just ok.

This movie is packed full of stars. The one that shone brightest for me is Ryan Gosling. He has a way of delivering his lines with that twinkle in his eyes that proves he loves what he is doing. He pairs up once again with Emma Stone who is a great co-star. Love the era, the clothes and the neon lights! A great Gansta movie if that's what you go for.

Movie was all right, seemed to be chopped up, a couple of parts seemed to have been tossed together and missing proper explanations, not written well at all.

It's sad that not one person saw this movie and mentioned the untouchables... which in my opinion is the original of this remake... Now some smartass is gonna comment on this and say the untouchables was the story of Elliott ness and Al Capone... Guess what, use the same story different characters... [...] Worth the money go watch it.

In order for a violent movie to be great, unfortunately, it has to get you emotionally. In other words, it has to make you really hate someone or really love someone. This movie is very good, but I would suggest it is missing desperate emotion which could have made it great. I disagree with predictability because it's advertized to be what it is. Not sure what kind of twists you need. Good guys vs bad guys. Very good movie. We all (about 10 of my extended fam ) thought it was very good.

This movie was more about style than reality... and style it had in droves. It captured the feel of the era, paying homage to the films of the 40's without too much camp. The movie managed to capture some of the 'bigger than life' experience one want from the cinema experience. They were a bit too cartoonish with the machine gun bullets which fail to find their targets, unless their targets were buildings, trees, windows and bystanders. Still, that didn't take away from the terrific acting, cinematography and directing of the movie. This is what you get when a bunch of real pros work together.

First, allow me to share a strategy I employ: When you're at the cinema, DO NOT WATCH THE TRAILERS!!! All too often doing so completely ruins the film; best parts shown, plot given away, sometimes even the ending... Close your eyes, plug your ears and sing or talk quietly to yourself. As far as this movie is concerned, I am ambivalent. Penn was clearly the highlight. He shamelessly overacted his part, but to great effect. Don't expect any character development, and don't expect much of a story. The car chases were exciting, but not for the gripping tension created. Rather, it was because of the spectacle of seeing beautiful vintage automobiles apparently being horribly damaged. I'd love to know how they pulled off the effects. Fake classics? CGI? Most frustrating was the endless and pointless shootouts. The takeaway lesson from this flick is that suits and ties are somehow "automatic weapon repellant" since literally thousands of rounds are fired, yet none actually hit anybody. Ever. It was a fun film to see on a half-price evening, but I would have been annoyed if I'd shelled out full price to see it. I'd say wait until you can rent it, but does anyone do that anymore?

A very, very entertaining movie. Another great acting job by Shawn Penn. His best since Mystic River. Josh Brolin is great and Gosling is well... Gosling... a very talented actor who does an amazing job at every part he touches! I do not understand the weak reviews on this site. It is as if they went to see a completely different movie. I just ask that the writers, actors and director entertain me and they definitely did that with this movie. Well done.

Entertaining, but if it was an homage to old gangster movies, it was missing something. Some poor shoot-outs as well.

It was a good gangster film, but was it memorable? Or a film I'll be running out to buy once released on DVD? No... But I would recommend it be a great "older family movie night" flick good action, easy to follow story, but mainly because there is no uncomfortable sex scenes.

[ATTENTION: This review reveals content of the movie.]
I was highly anticipating this one and although it is not destined to be looked upon as a classic gangster movie it will still thoroughly entertain anyone who gives it a chance, despite the fact that the exact same story was told a lot more economically in the first 5 minutes of LA Confidential. This film's strongest asset is a dream cast, with great actors in every major role, insuring that there is always someone or something compelling onscreen. Penn is terrific as Mickey Cohen as are Brolin and Gosling as the rogue cops who take him down. The climactic hotel shootout is a violent, exiting set-piece and a definite standout.

Having read the reviews of this movie I am wondering if I saw the same movie. It's not often such a great cast comes up with a collective dud. The story was at best boring and the characters totally predictable. Save you quarter.

It was entertaining enough, not alot of depth in the characters or script, which is too bad as being based on a true story, I am sure there was loads of depth to develop. Sean Penn was just scary though and Josh reminded me of Dragnet for some reason... if you're looking [for] action, you won't be denied. Just a ho hum show for me.

Stylish and fast-paced, this is a straight-ahead, no nonsense, old fashioned cops and gangster movie with snappy dialogue and funny moments and violence. Well-cast with good performances by all. Not an Oscar winner but a good entertaining film.

Have to say I was very impressed with "Gangster Squad"... just a slick, stylish, drama/thriller that easily entertains. I didn't know anything about this movie going in, nor did I really know anything on real life head mobster "Mickey Cohen", although I knew of his name. However," Gangster Squad" has a good premise. It may not be an instant classic like the Godfather Trilogy, Goodfellas, and other memorable ones, but it does have a few nice qualities that help keep the movie fun and thrilling. For one thing, the story is simple, easy to follow, and combined with a really great cast, along with some big name actors... you can't help but be drawn into this fast-paced production. Though the acting is just about flawless, it's a bit on the cliche side at times, but personally it wasn't that big of a deal for me. I still enjoyed the film. Dialogue was interesting too, and at times very funny. Sean Penn is positively unmerciful and deranged in his role as Mickey Cohen. His performance is tremendous, and he steals just about every scene... wow! Also, Josh Brolin does a great job with his cocky, cool act, and Ryan Gosling is good as well... magnetic and laid-back as usual. They both perfectly portray the face of their vigilante-style band of misfits. As for Emma Stone, I thought she was miscast. To be honest, I thought her character was a bit underplayed, although she wasn't that bad, this clearly wasn't her best performance. The gratuitous romance between her and Gosling though was interesting however. Nick Nolte, although he played such a small part, wasn't too bad in his role either as the head of the LAPD. Also, as I've discovered this movie doesn't quite follow the exact story on Mickey Cohen to the letter... this is merely Hollywood's new adaptation, some may like it and some may not. Aside from that," Gangster Squad" has a good element of suspense. The action sequences are continuous and perfectly executed as well. For me the action was nicely balanced with most of the battles lasting longer than a minute, yet fast enough not to drag on. With guns blazing, bullets flying at every second, there is undoubtedly a lot of violence in this picture, and at times quite shocking. Some of the gruesome, graphic images were a little too grotesque and had me looking the other way. Yet it wouldn't really be much of a gangster movie if there wasn't any violence or gore. Nice to see the profanity was kept to a minimum. Lastly, the setting is also imposing, drawing you into the late 1940's in L. A. Costumes, hairstyles are amazing. I was pleased with the stunning visuals, camera work was very good too. Overall, just a fun, rough-and-tumble film about good guys doing wrong to take down bad guys doing worse. Go check it out!
