Reminded me of Haneke's Caché. By the way, some of the negative comments betray ludicrous misunderstanding of the movie. For the attentively patient.

The way that you swing from person to person, side to side of the story, is amazing. A refreshing change from Hollywood where everything is spoon fed to you.

The actors are fantastic. At times it felt like watching a documentary about Iranian life. Not a lot of action going on at times but it makes you think a lot...

I found this film to be a very powerful drama testing the morality of all the characters, definitely something one should see in the foreign film genre category. This film is a good way to rethink ones mindset of our place in the global village. Watching this the viewer realizes that in todays world we forget that people elsewhere have lives, families and complex personal issues which despite cultural differences we easily share the same inner human tragedies and confrontations.

Watched the movie three times. Each time enjoyed it more. In order to appreciate the storyline you have to pay attention to every detail, have patience and don't miss any moment.

It was interesting. A strange place, a strange people, a very strange ending. It was the first time I can remember when everyone attending a movie stayed through the ending credits. I know it wasn't a comedy but I had to laugh at what appears to be very strange behavior under the circumstances. I think the acting was well done but lost a lot in the translation.

I agree. This movie was dreadful. I nearly walked out. Only stayed because I kept praying it would get better. Sadly, it only got worse. Avoid this movie like the plague. It sucked that bad.

Mesmerizing!! Asghar Farhadi knows exactly who to build a story mix with suspense, tension, cleverness and more... the interpretation is near-perfect and an ending that is still on my mind.

It is very nice, I watched this movie twice and expecting to review once at least more. Lying is the fact for survival! For making their own dream, everybody from religious, teacher, students, who comply with Iran social stage and enviroment should lye to survive!!!

An ethical exploration set against the background of a nation in ill-repair. Does intention justify being inauthentic? The vision of three people trying to make their way through the obstacles of duty, ethics, and the heavy burden of pride is masterful. Ultimately, an inability to be humble and present costs a heavy price, a separation from those the characters wish to love.

In this story, you couldn't find bad people and good people. Really nice film. Everybody said lie except the girl. The story is strong.

Great acting, great dialogue. Very touching movie. This is not a feel good movie but a very hard reality check in a totally different culture. Deserved the Oscar for best foreign movie.

This movie is not the typical best foreign film winner. It is definitely not a "feel good" movie. It is an education. I can understand why people didn't like it. It is almost in real time with lots of dialogue. That said, it show cases present day Iran very well. It illustrates social issues: the desire to stay there for family; the desire to leave for a non-religious and open society; the impact of religion on day-to-day life, the legal system and family. It is definitely an important film. The subtext speaks volumes.

Initially it appears an interesting story. Until then when you understand that it's a defence of Sharia Law and islamist values. I feel taken for a fool! Political propaganda under disguise!

One of the best movies I have seen this year. Very good script and good acting. "A Separation" portrays Iranian social life, human relationships and justice system in a very interesting, realistic and touching manner. It deserved the Oscar for best movie in foreign language. I heartily recommend it.

This is a typical divorce drama, that happens to be set in Iran. Put it this way if this film and Roadhouse were both on cable, I would watch Roadhouse every time.

Unbelievable! This film won the Oscar for best (foreign) film in a language other than English. Frankly, In Darkness and Mr Lazhar are far more deserving with better stories and far better acting. The Academy members were probably fascinated by this glimpse of daily life in today’s Iran. In fact, it does fascinate but disturbs also. Seeing all these submissive women wearing the chador, even in their own home, is very disturbing. These women asking for spiritual guidance from Islamic law is revolting to anyone who cannot imagine a society where equality of the sexes is absent. The men on the other hand live a fully contemporary life without any shame. The story is weak but the elephant in the room has to be this heavy repression which is felt in the daily lives of these women. That is the true drama here. I was eager for it to end.

This is a wonderful movie about extremely hard decisions being made by flawed (and real) people.

The story was very intriguing, kept you wondering the outcome right till the end, and even then it was uncertain.. Problem was that it is packed with dialogue, makes it hard and tiring to read it all. Acting was great, the insight into another culture was very educational.

What an awful film. Listening to a jackhammer outside my window would be preferable to sitting through this annoying movie. I can't say one kind word about it. Everything about it was bad. It was simply one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune of sitting through.

Very interesting. A glimpse into another culture and to get out of there understanding them more. They have the same struggles as we all do and learn/try to cope as best they could. I also came out of there realizing that Alzheimer's has no barriers- gender, culture or nationality and the struggles are the same and how it impacts on people, their families and everyone around them. Gets really complicated when something that seems so trivial at first because of lack of communication snowballs into something big. Leaves one thinking and contemplating but thankful that we are in this part of the world. We should not take things for granted.

All I can say is this movie has astounding acting and layers upon layers of complexity. I was disappointed with the ending though... too long and drawn out and amounted to nothing. It deserved a better ending I think. I'm glad it won for best foreign language film.

Lying is like a labyrinth once you get into this game it is so hard to get out of it, you lie over and over again to cover for the first one and it goes on and on and complicates everything, there is only one way to get out of this and that is to tell the TRUTH. Separation is a very strong movie it plays with your emotions and takes you all the way to the depth of confusion, anger, desperation, risk and other qualities of a human being that have been masked to protect one against another.

A very real movie. Takes places in a just a few physical locations, so there is a lot of dialogue, very personal. Excellent glimpse inside a modern Iranian family dealing with a complex situation. Slow, but very enjoyable. Just saw Monsieur Lazhar, can't wait to see In Darkness.
