I did not know what this movie was about. I saw the previews and thought what the hey and to my surprise it was really good. I liked it!

Saw this at TIFF when Glenn Close in attendance. If brutally boring & slow are your thing, you'll love it. If you want to take an overpriced nap, you'll love it. Otherwise, see something else!

Well done, successful depiction of life and survival in mid 1800's Britain. How lucky we are to be living in the here and now in Canada were single women are safe and free to be themselves.

Superb movie. Well written, excellent acting, terrific period production. Plus it makes you think about gender roles, society, the economics of our time, friendship and love. Simply a terrific story and probably one that is more true than not. Plus it is beautifully done. Well done.

If there was a story to be told in this film, I didn’t get it. While watching I heard echos of Lynch’s the Elephant-man. Resemblance if any would be in the tone. The era is similar and the focus is on an outcast also. The depiction of Ireland in the late 19th century with its decency veneer and gross hypocrisy is as good as it gets. The character of Nobbs, the simple little man is summed when he says: «a life without decency would be unbearable». The irony is the misery of Nobbs’ life in order to maintain this so-called decency. But Nobbs is a bore and all around him is even less interesting. The redeeming factor is Glenn Close who shows us once again the magnitude of her towering talent in an intense portrayal of this little man, which makes us almost forget that Nobbs is a transvestite. But the lack of subtlety in the script doesn’t let us forget it, with constant visual reminders. There was material here for a great film, but the script goes in every direction mostly into inconsequential storylines. Too bad!

Superb acting by Glenn Close. But very slow... makes one think of things that could really happen at any time and period. Sort of a human interest movie. Food for thought...

Don't know why Glenn Close received an Oscar nomination for her role as the titular Albert Nobbs. It's a very uninteresting performance aside from perhaps one effective scene. The film itself is pretty flat. Even the talented Mia Wasikowska didn't hold my interest as the down-on-her-luck parlour maid who Albert takes a shine to. The only actor I found somewhat inspired was Janet McTeer, playing another woman disguised as a man. At least she showed some passion. Glenn Close's character was so reserved and repressed that it was difficult to watch.

Interesting film... Although I tend to enjoy slow moving films, such as 'Remains of the Day' or 'The Piano', I found this film did not hold my attention throughout the film. I am trying to determine if the film was to be told in the 3rd person, where the audience is not supposed to be able to empathize with any of the characters - if so, then it was a good film. The acting was exemplary by the entire cast... the story is a sad tale. Would I pay to see it again, no... found myself checking the time during the film - not a good sign.

The acting was brilliant by everyone in the cast. It was a thoughtful, beautifully photographed movie. The costumes, well everything about this movie was wonderful. My daughter and I really loved it.

Terrific acting by the ensemble cast. The one stood best for me was Mia W. It was an Oscar worthy performance. Quite a talented actress, reminds me of a young Kate Blanchett.

The movie is not for everyone, but it is a great movie - simple, linear but profound! If you have no worries nor problems in life, you wouldn't like this movie. It is great as the film holds back a lot of emotions, but significantly uses the camera work and acting! Glenn is great in this movie! Her acting alone is worth the admission. Life is a process of struggle for realizing ourselves... no matter gays or non-gays...

This movie was beyond depressing and even though the acting was good, the story was boring and dull. Glenn Close looked waxy and dead the whole movie. Her acting was just ok to me but the rest of the cast were very good.

Set in late XIXth Century Dublin, this movie exposes the backward social values of that era. One is caught thinking that some of that repression is still around today. The sets are faithful to the time. The movie is very evenly paced and draws the viewer into the inner conflicts and hopes of Albert Nobbs. Excellent acting by Glenn Close.

A great drama, very powerful and touching story. It's amazing how it describes the way society functioned in the 1800's. How difficult it was for women to survive. Strong cast; Glenn Close and Mia Wasikowska were awesome. It's slow, but it's a wonderful story, makes you cry, laugh and think about lots of things!

Story a bit slow to unfold but excellent acting and presentation especially from Glen Close and Janet McTeer. Nice to see Pauline Collins again as well. Upstairs-Downstairs fans will remember her as Sarah.

This is a good movie; the ending was a bit abrupt, but I liked it. Glenn Close really outdoes herself in this performance, and I would see it just for her performance alone.

A Good depiction of life at that time and the desperate state of economics. The film is moving and kept me rooted to my chair to see more. Story is a little weak, but well worth seeing.

Time piece out of another era, something that cannot be understood just by reading about it. Very realistic. This was life and that was the only way to survive for some people. A must see for us to understand how much women have suffered in the past and how far we came to today.

I did not enjoy this movie. Glenn Close kept me from leaving. I enjoy slow films, but they are usually full of character development or plot. This film lacks. I really feel it is a shadow of what it could have been.

Saw this at TIFF. The acting is excellent and the film background (sets, costumes, etc) is very true to the period - good detail work. It is a solid depiction of what desperate single women had to do back in the 1890's in order to earn a barely decent living. It has a few comic moments too. Well worth seeing.
