Why on earth does Johnny Depp take on a movie like this. It was not funny. He is talented, but the writers are not.

Dark Shadows is a riot of a violent movie (with a larger than life history, from 1752 to 1972), with an unsuspected sense of humor. It's a story about non consummated love, Unbridled love, Untamed Souls, Hidden passions tainted in vengeful red, a story of a rapturous beautiful unrequited love that is as eternal as it is immortal, where lovers will find solace in each other in this Illusion or delusional universe where Dark Shadows lure in the Dark and Dark secrets unveil to gift us with a glimpse of hope in a chaotic universe, where many births lead to many deaths throughout centuries of personal history and close obsessive relations that carry a vengeful hideous dagger to the heart, where hearts are not to be taken by Pirates of the Dark but given in a tour de force nightmare facing some kind of unusual reality inside Castles and towns with no holds barred where possessive power is exerted to the max. This is solid entertainment of a movie like no other. This is “fantastic” horror tale carrying endless events that have cohesion and a story line full of surprises. Captivating and Enchanted. Great acting by fairly new young faces, Eva Green- The Dreamers (2003) (Isabelle) Cracks (2009) (Miss G) Dark Shadows 2012 (Angelique Bouchard) and the incomparable Bella Heathcote In Time (2011) (Michele Weis) Dark Shadows 2012 (Victoria Winters / Josette DuPres )

It has the odd laugh, but mostly it's just weird and nonsensical.
| 4/10 | stampimo@ - 91 reviews 1.8.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Did not watch the original series or remake series so can only comment on the movie as it stands. It's a neat idea and the first half is enjoyable but then it gets boring fast and I found myself waiting for the movie to end. You can probably find a better way to spend almost two hours of your life.

I really enjoyed this movie. I love Johnny Depp and the supporting cast that made this a very funny yet dark comedy. If you have a quirky sense of humour you will enjoy this.

Love Johnny but it was a B grade movie. Fun to watch and light hearted humour. Tim Burton movies are always strange, but this was a feel good movie.

I’m assuming it’s the recent obsession with vampires, including teenage vampire love and nonsensical vampire lore, that has made it okay to make movies based on bad 1960s horror- drama soap operas. I had also assumed that Tim Burton’s remake of “Dark Shadows” would be a comedy. In that case, at least, I was wrong. Unfortunately, the film stayed faithful to the original and was more soap opera-like than comedic. [...]

Oh my... what has Johnny done this time? Such a waste of a talented actor. One word to describe this horrible film - BLEChhh!!! Don't waste time or money and go see Hunger Games instead.
| 1/10 | popmuzik@ - 2 reviews 3.7.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Loved this movie. Johnny Depp at his quirkiest and most entertaining. How is it possible that he can be sexy even as an unattractive vampire? His range of acting skills is exceptional. Definitely Tim Burton. Not a movie for kids.

This is not really the type of movie that I go out to see but the trailer made it look good. The visuals were good but the storyline was dry. I went to the washroom half way and didn't really care what I missed. The movie had a few jokes that made me grin but not lol. Worth seeing it on the big screen for the visuals but prepare to be somewhat bored.

We love Depp/Burton and had high expectations going in... it looked funny on the trailer but as is typical of Hollywood fare these days, the best parts are in the adverts so as to draw you in. Depp? Well, he's one of the best actors, but even he could not raise the dredge that is this film. Burton has been brilliant at times as well, but again - not one of his best films. The cinematography was outstanding, and this is a credit to Burton's imaginative creativity. Unfortunately, the script was horrible for most of the film. Had more humour been written and less 'dark humour', this had the potential of an Edward Scissorhands style of movie, but could not measure up at all. Too bad as it is a waste of what this dynamic duo could bring to a movie. We'll all just have to wait until their next film to see if they can make something better.

A. It's not for kids, even though I'm twelve I don't act like a kid. B. Loved it! Johnny Depp did a really excellent job of Barnabus Collins! I liked the whole Angelique-has-been-pining-for-him-but-he-still-loves-his-old-girl-and-returning-to-the-casket-for-the-sake-of-love thing. It really tugs the heartstrings.

Very "Tim Burton" like movie. I have never seen the original show, but I did enjoy the film. Lots of dark humor, good actors and entertaining. Worth seeing.
| 8/10 | i7irene@ - 10 reviews 21.6.2012 - age: 26-35 |
If you watch the trailer you have seen the best part of this movie. If you must watch it to see JD in action (the reason I went) then rent the DVD. Money best spent elsewhere.

I liked it but didn't love it. There's humor and that works, though much is predictable and prescribed. Depp is good but the movie itself feels disjointed, as if the parts are okay but they don't exactly fit together. Still, worth seeing, especially if you're a Burton/Depp fan.

A really entertaining movie! If you like Johnny Depp style of movies then you will love this one.
| 7/10 | tazm@ - 5 reviews 17.6.2012 - age: 26-35 |
I really enjoyed this. You have to take it for what it is and not have the original in mind I think and if you do that... it was really pretty good. I actually laughed a couple of times which none of the so-called comedy movies can usually get me doing. A fun spoof on the dark side with enough drama parts included to keep it entertaining. Worth the time and money... done well.

I like Johnny Depp, he is a brilliant actor and in this movie he is good but the movie itself is not that great. There were some good effects but the characters I feel are all disjointed.
| 6/10 | mcconeghy_family@ - 5 reviews 11.6.2012 - age: 50+ |
Some really good parts but overall I expected better. And the "climax ending" , not my favorite that's for sure.
| 6/10 | comedylover@ - 5 reviews 10.6.2012 - age: 18-25 |
I liked the original TV show and with Johnny Depp I was expecting it to be great. It was not. Some scenes were great with an underlying dark humor, but as a whole totally disappointing. The highlight was how Depp looked, that was amazing, so young. The young boy was really an impressive actor. And that is all the good things I can report. At the end you could tell that Burton was too involved. It had the feeling of some of his stranger movies and storylines. The humor was drained out of the story as the movie progressed. By the end so many themes were thrown in you could tell it was advertising for additional movies. Don't bother unless someone else pays.

Hardly a comedy as the trailers suggested, but actually a fairly compelling little drama. Pretty creative little world and surprisingly entertaining characters.

I was not a fan of the original Dark Shadows TV program, but you shouldn't see this movie for that reason. Why you should is that it is an excellent rendition of the 60s-70s, and something of a laugh riot. Depp is one of the best comedic actor of this decade and the scenery meets the criteria of any small fishing village. Great fun all around.

Johnny Depp movies are usually masterpieces, and this one is no different. Very entertaining. Director Tim Burton creates his usual genius-caliber kind of work too. Enjoyed it a lot.

Some things should be left alone, like the original Dark Shadows TV series and the original Dark Shadows movies. Classic and cult status entertainment cannot be recaptured in a remake... and the attempt at humour in this movie does not translate into laughs... just sadness. Don't see this movie, don't rent it... don't waste your time. I wish Burton better luck with Lincoln - Vampire Killer... but until then... sighhh.
| 4/10 | rainom11@ - 52 reviews 2.6.2012 - age: 36-49 |
Quite mainstream for a Burton/Depp movie but I enjoyed it. Acting and direction were top notch but if you're expecting either start to finish far end of the scale weirdness or zany antics, you'll be disappointed. Take away the vampire and the witch and you have an almost conventional unrequited love triangle... but better done and more tongue in cheek than most. I found it relatively low key and subtle, (considering the players), but it worked for me. All in all a refreshingly enjoyable movie.

It was just ok for me, not one of my favourite Burton-Depp collaborations. It was too odd, even for a Tim Burton film.

For someone that saw the original Dark Shadows on TV, this is more a parody, not a serious remake, the positive elements of the movie can't be appreciated when you try to match it to the original concept. Isn't there enough imagination nowadays to create a concept/story of their own?.. Sorry Johnny Depp's fans but even his performance is repetitive, I thought I was watching Edward Scissorhands dressed as a vampire now. Too bad they made a joke of the original one. Good bye Barnabas Collins.

Another nice movie from Tim Burton. In a soap opera style so be warned it is not Sleepy Hollow. Great acting by Michele Pfeiffer and Johnny Depp. Quite funny!

I just saw the movie today, I enjoyed it a lot. I was a fan of the original tv series and I love the way they used many elements of it and added the Tim Burton's touch as well, however I wished Johnny Depp was less Johnny Depp and more Barnabas Collins, no offense. I wished they had done something more according to the tone of the original Dark Shadows and Barnabas, there was a lot to explore there.

| 9/10 | winter_south@ - first review 29.5.2012 - age: 36-49 |
If I could I would have given it a 6 and half. I enjoyed it. It was fun and Depp was as good as usual. The acting on the whole was great. However I think they tried to get too much in to the film in a effort to be loyal to the "Dark Shadow" fans. It was beautiful to look at but sometimes I was bored. They succeeded however in creating the feel of the 60s and 70s. I say you should rent it. With a few glasses of red wine it might even get 8 or 7 out of 10.

This movie was definitely worth seeing, visually more than anything. The story is not mind blowing but good enough for this type of movie. Good casting, solid acting, interesting mix of 70's hippy era and 18. Century... very different than movies these days in Cinema. I like it, if you like art, painting, colors you would like it too!
| 7/10 | mokrinski@ - 12 reviews 29.5.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Don't walk in expecting to have a barrel of laughs from this movie. Expect it to be a light-hearted thriller/drama. The script was good, the characters were interesting, the stage design was amazing, the effects were cool. It was entertaining. ***Be advised parents: THERE IS A LOT OF SEXUALITY in this movie. Don't take your kids to see it. ***

Story line is not very impressive, but Great acting cast. The Barnabas and Angelique scene is a bit tacky though. It is fun to watch.
| 7/10 | dia_sb_11@ - 15 reviews 27.5.2012 - age: 26-35 |
Excellent acting and great story. I had a lot of fun. Johnny Depp's character was masterful and his exploration and discovery of how things are 200 years from when he was first buried are filled with humorous moments and memorable lines. Also impressive was Eva Green, whose Angelique is captivating right from the start. The theme of family, and the loyalties and betrayals that occur within, reflect genuinely and consistently throughout the movie. Great work by Tim Burton!

To me watching a Tim Burton film, even Planet of the Apes, is like going to a see an art exhibit by Salvador Dali. You are just amazed by the way he uses the screen as a canvas to tell a story. Not every painting is amazing, but, you are still amazed just the same, by the choice of colors, light, composition and emotion. If you take heed of the scene with the Hippies and see it a second time, you might even find this movie to be a master piece.
