I just watched Tomboy on dvd, after reading great reviews. It was beautifully filmed. Zoe Heron was amazing as Mikael as were the child actors. I loved the scenes between Mikael and her sister. I'm not sure we are meant to focus on the film in depth or on transgender issues. At that age I wanted to be a boy, but I didn't grow up transgendered. It's a film about innocence & growing up.

Wow what a beautiful, simplistic movie with substance. The child actors behave so naturally, most of the scenes you see them at play. I really felt like I was there in person or watching some home video footage. Very convincing role played by Zoe Heran. I recommend this movie for anyone, what a gem!

The opening visual scene is hauntingly beautiful, and sets the tone of visual cinematography delights for the outdoor scenes, especially in the forest with the trees and branches and leaves rustling gently their lovely sounds. One scene with the large trees dominating the screen and the main character, Laure, looking small indicates how the director uses nature and composition to make a statement about loneliness and deep isolation. The acting for the most part is intense - many close ups of Laure, perhaps too many? Whose acting and strong expressions are remarkable, especially for someone of that young an age. The little sister also acts in a superb manner. The storyline - script is what it is and perhaps needs not go more into the past or think about the future. It is a forever summer, often of anguish and painful emotion for Laure, yet with some moments of joy and happiness sprinkled into the summer of playing and trying to be ones self and fit in while embracing the shortness of summertimes' ending. Although the indoor, almost a kind of video realism filming, was not to my liking, it did however, serve its purpose of depicting ordinary family scenes and indoor environment to look almost like a realist and documentary kind of style. A well made film, well filmed, wonderfully acted, with a script that some may say should have included more information - storyline - questions unanswered, concerning the transgender theme. A strong film.

This film makes us revisit a most defining time of our lives, the preteen years where our sexual appetite awakens and where we try to mold our identity. We follow these 6 to 10 years old in their world with its own rules. This film aims to be nothing more than a portrait of this girl who desires to pass as a boy in that world. We would have hoped for a more in-depth view of the torments of trangenderism, but that film has yet to be made. That said, Tomboy is a non-pretentious and competent film.

An amazing, wonderful and very touching movie. Loved it very much. First the story was so beautiful, real and interesting. The kids did great job acting, specially Zoe Heron, just amazing, very talented little girl, she deserves an Oscar. Unfortunately these kind of movies are rare and don't have a big audience, cause it's not a big budget movie. Would watch it again. Great job!

I attended a screening of "Tomboy" at Vancity and found it to be a perfectly delightful experience, like a breath of fresh air. It was like having a window into the lives of those children. The naturalness of it all brought back so many memories from my own childhood experiences. I loved the kind sensitivity of the parents, and, I felt the sting of the face slap, both from the Laure's and her mother's perspective. Her mom's tears clearly demonstrated instant regret about her response to the news of Mikael's (Laure's) behaviour. The closing few frames, showing Laure's smile, was an illustration of the resilience of childhood relationships when 'well meaning' parents don't get in the way. I can't wait to purchase the BluRay or DVD as soon as it is released here in Canada. Any idea when that will be?

This is one movie that pushes our boundaries to new heights. Explore this question: was there a 'better solution'? Will there be better options for children facing the same dilemma? Superb cinematography; the little sister's acting is incredible. Asonishingly insightful, a must see by every parent having young children (and others of course)!

A really beautiful film. Surprisingly funny. Very dear. The film centers on children most of the time. They live such complex things in such an innocent, pure way. The two main characters, Laure / Michaël and their little sister Jeanne steal every scene they're in. Both give amazing performances. A really beautiful film that shows what society complicates/dictates (gender identity) is much less of an issue through the eyes of a 5 year old (as it should be for all of us)
