Would have been better if the movie was not that long with unwanted scenes. There was a point to all those scenes but again what do you expect from the title itself.

A superficial book for a superficial audience, result, a superficial film. Julia Roberts was a poor choice for the lead as well the cinematography didn't justify her travels. Divorce is not the answer when one is on path to explore their life. You can find spiritual growth without a plane ticket if you can change your personal perspective. I was sucked into this overrated book and was curious what the movie offered. Maybe I need to be divorced so I can feel better about the collapse of a marriage with this book as a companion. Though if you have no spiritual awareness then you have no business getting married in the first place. The sacred sacrament of the engagement is not a plot for business and profit, only a superficial person would sell their life in such ugly fashion.

If it wasn't too long I would give it a ten but I enjoyed every minute of this film. I had a good laugh from certain ways of expression The scnery takes its cake having it in all different parts of Europe. Julie Roberts will always be good in her character parts to make her romance parts to make us think and wonder what will happen in her relationship. There is a lesson to one who sees why things go the wrong way but things do get iron out and stories like this happen all the time and many of us go through it and we by seeing it here see and learn at the same time. I think the person who wrote it had wanted us to get the message clear as he either went through it himself this way or he has heard from friends or relatives that this was this kind of relationship. Ones who watch this probably it brings memories of their situation and sees that there is a lesson to learn by watching this kind of film. I found it quite intriguing.

Sleep, cuss, run!! A thorough waste of money and time. Probably Julia Roberts's worst-ever film.

I saw it a second time but with my mom... and wow it's a great movie when you see it with someone that enjoys movies you enjoy it too... don't go watching it with your teen friends, they'll ruin it.

That movie came at exactly right time, and I just love it!!

This movie was lame. The worst part of the movie for me is that the main character had no depth and was not believable. Although Roberts is a good actor the character that was written for her was underdeveloped and superficial. The movie was too long, and the jokes were lame for any age group.

I went with a group of people needless to say I didn't pick it but it was exactly as I had expected. DUMB movie, do not waste your money.

I didn't pay for that movie and I'm quite glad. This movie is build to show how pretty Julia Roberts is. Her smile is awesome, but I've seen it way too much in that film. The images were great, great colors. But that's it. I heard someone say that we should call it : Eat Pray Spend. And I'm not going to spend money on this one.

The story didn't seem to go anywhere, we walked out on the India trip. The worst of Julia's movies, we are great fans of hers, hoping she comes up with something better.

First of all, little bit too long for a movie like this. We couldn't understand what she wants and what is she trying to do... Liza's character was too confused, sometimes it was really boring. Italy part was the most interesting part, after that it was pretty depressing and slow.
| 5/10 | dimanta@ - 145 reviews 9.10.2010 - age: 26-35 |
I am fed up with characters in books and/or movies that decide to just get up and end their relationship/marriage because they "are not having fun anymore" or "aren't excited" or "want more". That's fine. Make your bed. Lie in it. Basing a movie around a woman that it's almost impossible to understand why she is so hard done by or yearning? Hard to care. The Italian sequence works best. The India sequence is the dullest. Richard Jenkins and Javier Bardem are welcome additions.

Well-acted, well-shot, good "odyssey" story of a person finding herself. Won't ever rank with the greats but a worthwhile evening.

Enjoyable, well-rounded film. Everyone needs to do a little soul-searching, even if we don't admit to it. Lightfully delightful. ND.

This movie is definitely underrated by most. I thought the movie presented a good representation of the author's story, with, both very good acting and some poor interpretations of her time in India, especially in regards to the male friend, who comes across as very wounded, cynical and less than spiritually wise. In contrast were the relationships to some of the strong female characters... mostly wise and showing the main character, Elizabeth, the various aspects of herself, as well as the universal theme of remaining true to one's authentic self and no longer the subject old roles played in relationships... free to love without strings. And that is what I took away with me. The movie was above average and I, for one, am happy it was made.

I have never seen such a whining and poor representation of an individual trying to find their spiritual self. Totally missed the mark of delivering a great message. A self indulgent film which was so bad I would have walked out but my date kept thinking it was going to get better - which it never did. If Julie Roberts keeps picking pathetic scripts like this she will have a fulltime job as a mom - only.

Disappointingly drawn out with poor editing, and the cinematography, despite other reviewer's high praise, wasn't lush - it was hackneyed. Sorry, but this movie was as "spiritual" as one of those "repent sinner" stickers placed on telephone poles.

Julia Roberts playing Julia Roberts. Just like in every movie she does. So long, so boring. Literally nothing funny happened.

| 8/10 | debbielp@ - 2 reviews 21.9.2010 - age: 36-49 |
An extremely silly movie about a spoiled girl who thinks it cool to drop all her comittments and go find herself. Contains Hollywoods usual superficial views of other countries most of which have real people who do not have the time or resources to spend on "finding themselves" and have more of a sense of responsiblity: this is the most foolish and meaningless movie of the year.
| 2/10 | teeletter@ - first review 20.9.2010 - age: 50+ |
Way too long. I thought it was ending two times before it did. I felt like Liz (Julia Roberts) didnt accomplish much even by the end of the movie.

If you would like to see a sensitive and beautiful film about a spiritual journey, you will probably enjoy this film. It helps if you have read the book on which the story is based. Having visited the exotic destinations will also inform your viewing. Just don't expect your own enlightenment to turn out this splendidly unless you resemble either like Julia Roberts or like the equally attractive author of the book. Fashionably pretty women have more options and opportunities than other mere mortals so let's remember that. If you would prefer an action film with some good explosions, car-chases and donnybrooks, spend your money elsewhere. Personally, I loved this film but it's not for everyone and it's definitely not a blockbuster.

I'm glad that I didn't pay to see this movie. It's watchable but it really is for an older audience. I couldn't relate to it and found it very long for nothing.

Interesting idea but big lips... I mean Julia Roberts? Not believable in this role. An unknown would have been a better choice in my opinion. I also found the typical 'Hollywood moments' that are probably intended to endear us to the characters kind of lame... and insulting actually.

The great acting, the gorgeous scenery, and the simple lessons of life and love make this a really good movie to see. It is not for people who need a fast-pace film. It is for those who simply want to sit down, unwind, and let themselves be transported in a beautiful story. I truly enjoyed it. I laughed, and cried, and will see it again when it comes out on DVD.

*Ahem... uh, my own feeling is that, if a finely crafted bit of movie-making art like The American is getting 1's out of 10, while a cliched, maudlin, cheap, exploitive and heroically narcisisstic movie like this one gets 9's and 10's, then it really o's time for Al Queda to nuke us all into oblivion, because western civilization is all over with anyway.

First, I loved the book and looked forward to the movie. I went with someone who hadn't read the book. She was lost. I found they left out key parts and changed things for reasons I didn't understand. The constant camera panning made us dizzy. There are good moments and I laughed out loud several times but it could have been better. The movie is carried by the strength of the story and by good acting. The script and the filming didn't help at all. Probably a rental.

A must see and a fantastic movie. The story of everyone. We all go through similar stages in our life. Nice scenes from Italy and great things about meditation in India. Only the complaint I have is the guy she fell in love at the end, the script is little weak to show the strong bond between them. But overall it’s a marvellous piece of work from Julia Roberts once again. I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie wins couple of Oscar awards.

Not a bad movie but quite long. Didn't move me, which surprised me. The prayer part of the movie wasn't really prayer but meditation in front of a guru woman. Um, did you know you can actually 'talk' to God and listen for his voice by actually learning about Him through the Bible and other solid sources? This part annoyed me since I feel she was missing out on the personal and intimate relationship with our Creator on His terms instead of her own misguided ways. Hopefully, the wonderful man she met in Bali (who IS a champion, by the way) has helped her on her path to find the truth about what God wants for her... Life to the fullest and a relationship with Him (God) forever (although she may not be looking for that and instead looking for only self-satisfaction by the universe which doesn't give a hoot about anyone. Julia Roberts was wonderful as always (don't get why she got panned) Scenery was great. Just was so full of deceptions and many seductions that were actually evil but were clothed in white. Just my opinion.

Although I like Julia Roberts, this was not her best. It just did not feel real. No chemistry with the love interest. Almost fell asleep. Nice scenery though. I never read the book, but probably won't bother, since the movie was so bad. Too much hype, not worth the price to see it.

Apart from bad editing and lighting according to my daughter, we thought that movie was worth seeing. For myself, I could relate to the state of mind of Liz, everywoman goes through that. I think everyone goes throught such a phase, if you are brave enough to look inside yourself. I will definitely read the book and find moments and thoughts that were not in the movie.
